Even though early day’s Val’s goal kicking record of 44.4% success rate in 2025 is not up to scratch compared to his last 3 years. This cost us a win yesterday.

In the 2024 NRL season, Valentine Holmes' goal-kicking success rate with the North Queensland Cowboys was 84.87%.

Here's a breakdown of his kicking performance:

  • Season: 2024 NRL Telstra Premiership
  • Team: North Queensland Cowboys
  • Kicking Percentage: 84.87%
  • 2023 Kicking Percentage: 82.93%
  • 2022 Kicking Percentage: 81.97%

I've got to chime in on this one...

Is Val missing a few goals, in varying wind conditions down in the gong yesterday, the reason we lost the game ?

Or was it poor marker defence from Su'a on our goal line?

Or was it ineffective performances in the front row rotation - specifically Lawrie and Guler?

Or was it poor coaching, not prepared properly for a Souths (Bennett coached) team that wasn't going to ever beat themselves?

Or was it complete mental ineptitude?

Or is it a mix of all the above (plus maybe a few more reasons)?

... because if we point to just Val missing a few goals (because even Nathan Cleary has off days with the boot) - then that is a very short sighted look at the overall issues that have not only been in existence for the best part of the last 15 seasons, but still need fixing (and major hard decisions need to be made in order for us to even get on the right path towards fixing these issues let alone fixing them to the point of being able to win enough games which will make us regular finals contenders year after year).

I've had some thoughts about this. Could low percentages be attributed to his home base being Wollongong/Kogarah and the higher than normal winds at those grounds... Maybe Lomax was a genius.
