The NSWRL today pays tribute to Fred Fayers, who passed away on Sunday. Fayers was the man most responsible for the establishment of the Ryde-Eastwood RLFC.
Fred Fayers played first grade with Western Suburbs, Newtown and Balmain during the 1940s and also served with the Royal Australian Navy during the Second World War.
It was during his service that he encountered fanatical Hawthorn fans who continually shouted "Up the Hawks" during battle, and when he began Ryde-Eastwood he transplanted the Hawks moniker.
Such was his devotion to Ryde-Eastwood that he mortgaged two properties to help get the licensed premises off the ground, and he served as an employee as well as a director for many years.
