St George Illawarra front-rower Paul Vaughan has taken the early guilty plea after being charged with a grade one tripping charge following Thursday night's slender win over the Parramatta Eels.

Vaughan caught Eels forward David Gower with his leg just after half-time in the Dragons' eventual two-point win.

The Origin III-bound Vaughan won't miss any football but will cop an $1100 fine.

Bit of a no-brainer.

Take the $1100 fine to play in a game where you are paid $30000.

Dragons prop Paul Vaughan has been charged with a grade one crusher tackle by the NRL match review committee following the Red V's tight win over the Brisbane Broncos on Friday night.

Vaughan was placed on report midway through the first half for the tackle on Broncos winger Richard Kennar.

Due to a prior similar offence in recent seasons, Vaughan is facing a two-week suspension with the early guilty plea.

The Dragons have until 12pm Sunday to lodge their plea.

Vaughan and Kikau facing NRL bans
  • National Sport

Paul Vaughan faces a crusher tackle ban stemming from St George Illawarra's NRL clash with Brisbane.
Paul Vaughan could face up to three weeks on the sidelines for what was labelled an "accidental" crusher tackle in St George Illawarra's NRL win over Brisbane.

Vaughan was on Saturday charged with a crusher tackle on Broncos winger Richie Kennar, with referee Henry Perenara seeming to say "accidental" after he blew the penalty.

Kennar clutched at his neck after the tackle, as he turned in the collision and ended up with his back facing Vaughan and no room for his neck.

It comes after Manly coach Des Hasler earlier warned that he feared players could face long bans for accidental incidents when players turn in tackles.

Regardless, Vaughan becomes the second player charged this weekend under the NRL's new crusher crackdown after Parramatta's Marata Niukore.

The Dragons front-rower can reduce the length of a ban to two matches with an early guilty plea, with a prior crusher tackle last year working against him.

The possible suspension comes after Vaughan was only on return from a two-week hiatus for a biosecurity breach earlier this month.

It follows a controversial weekend for the dangerous tackle style, amid suggestions players had stayed down to milk penalties in Parramatta's loss to Melbourne.

Eels coach Brad Arthur defended his players and denied they had tried to milk penalties at the time, a point Storm counterpart Craig Bellamy disagreed with.

Penrith second-rower Viliame Kikau could also face a two-game ban, for an off-the-ball hit.

Kikau was picked up for crunching Cronulla half Braydon Trindall late in the Panthers' win, with his suspension able to be reduced to one game with an early guilty plea.

Brisbane hooker Issac Luke is staring down the barrel of a week on the sidelines for dropping his body weight onto the unprotected legs of Josh Kerr.

I get the impression that they are attempting to ‘ Craig Smith ‘ the poor sod out of the game ?

You could run a horse brush over the entire Melbourne team and I can bet you pounds to peanuts that you still would not catch one of their players on a guilty charge .
If it was a f**king rooster, nothing to worry about, there gunning for him after the COVID-19 breach, thanks to levy, little fat turd, whinging and wining about the breach.

Hi All have a read of today’s Sydney Herald article on crusher tackles and the issue of unfair suspensions and probable gamesmanship from here on because it’s nearly impossible to defend a charge.

I reckon Vaughan will be suspended regardless of defence rebuttal of the charge. Thereafter, as in touching referees and other stuff made up on the run, it will disappear into the stupid file at the NRL.The only hope is that the judiciary panel of ex players sensibly dismiss the charge.

Add throwing footy boot away to stupid made up penalties. Would luv Vaughn to escape but being cited for crusher means gone.

Vaughan has taken the early guilty plea and will be out for two weeks. So two weeks off (bubble breach), one on, then two more off (suspension). With our luck, he might get suspended again when he resumes. The refs will undoubtedly ping him for some other minor indiscretion.

How is it that we get the raw deals?

Because we’ve turned into a cellar dwelling club.

There is milking happening imo, no doubt.

There was one in the warriors dogs game today.

A warriors outside back backed into a tackle and the defender hardly made any contact with him and he reached straight for his neck, drew the penalty and report then gets up, right as rain and plays on.

Similar to Vaughan's case, minimal contact and the attacker is more at fault than the defender.

It's just bollocks and it's plain to see...

Probably a wise decision not to fight it. Given last weeks 2 cases where they cramped down on the so called 'hip drop' tackle, I doubt they would changed their stance on this new 'crusher' crackdown, which would have then been a 3 week suspension.
2 weeks take the medicine and come back for the important game v Raiders.

They need to change this rule.
If the players are turning around and backing into tackles to get more leg drive and post contact meters then its not the defenders fault if a crusher occurs.
They should penalise players for backing into the defence and sitting down.
Thats dangerous.
