Vautin severs all ties
By Dean Ritchie / July 15, 2003
INFLUENTIAL Manly identity Paul Vautin last night quit as a football club board member, claiming he wanted to prevent the embattled Sea Eagles from further haemorrhaging.
Vautin's shock resignation, effective immediately, means one of Manly's most famous players now has no official connection with the club.
His resignation came via a hand-written letter sent to Manly chief executive Ian Thomson, a copy which has been obtained by The Daily Telegraph.
The former Manly and Test player announced a fortnight ago he would stand down as chairman and as a member of the board at the club's AGM in December.
However Vautin has elected to walk immediately.
Vautin wrote: "I have only ever done my very best for this club as a player and a board member and I leave now with my head held high and my dignity intact.
"A lot of my acquaintances tell me that one problem I have is that I love Manly. This won't change.
"I would like to thank my fellow board members Max Krilich, Peter O'Dwyer, Joe Cross, Max Delmege and Rex Murphy for their unwavering support, also the hard working staff of the football club, the wonderful bunch of players and the coach in Peter Sharp.
"Chief executive Ian Thomson has always been a great friend and inspiration to me. Mate it just wasn't to be.
"I bleed maroon and white and am proud to do so. I wish everyone at Manly success for the rest of the season and beyond."
Manly Leagues Club chairman Ken Arthurson was last night shocked when told Vautin the Channel Nine rugby league commentator had resigned.
"It is a surprise he has left early," Arthurson said.
"But Paul goes with my best wishes.
"He's been a great player for Manly and a great club stalwart."
Thomson paid tribute to Vautin's tenure as Sea Eagles chairman.
"I've said all along when the club needed help Paul Vautin put his hand up to help and he should be recognised for that,' Thomson said yesterday.
"But it is sad. I'm sure there are hundreds of sporting organisations out there who would love Paul Vautin's profile to be involved with their club."
Vautin's controversial resignation come as part of a deal brokered with Manly Leagues Club to pump funds into the cash-strapped football club.
The Leagues Club deal, worth $3 million over the next three years, was made on the condition Vautin would step aside with Leagues Club representatives to take over.
Cross is expected to take over as football club chairman when the board meets within the next three weeks.
It is understood the club was $600,000 short of what it needed to make it to the end of 2004 and may have collapsed financially by the middle of next season.
Vautin's demise is also attributed to ongoing feuds with certain media outlets.

Manly fans; is there more to this story then what we're being told?

What exactly does this mean? Why would this influence his decision?
