I love long songs, plenty of the more extreme metal acts often produce really long numbers (makes it easier when your not worried about recording hit singles)

Nile - Unas, Slayer of the Gods (11 min)

Actually most of my favourite albums have tracks that push past the 8 minute mark.

Actually Unas was the last Pharoah of the 5th Dynasty in the old Kingdom of Ancient Egypt around 2350 BC. The title refers to the legends regarding him that were found inscribed on his tomb.
He's got better documented history than King Arthur or Jesus anyway!

For long songs that got played on the radio, Bob Dylan's Like a Rolling Stone set the standard.

"This was the middle of the summer and we were hearing this long song on the radio. "how does it feel ...to be own your own...like a Rolling Stone". Robbie Robertson said , "That's a long record. It's got to be six, seven minutes long". "Sure has got a lot of words in it" Richard remarked. Garth like the organ part. We knew who it was.
