The last track on Made In Heaven by Queen.

It goes for about 23 minutes... good chillout music, if anything.

If you want long songs, check out the album "Things Viral" by Khanate; 59 minutes, 4 tracks with the shortest at 9 minutes and the longest at almost 20. Mind you it's so brain-rottingly sssslllloooooowwwwww that if you sped the songs up ato a sae tempo they'd probably be 3 minutes or so each!

Prince's last album before Musicology, the 'questionable' concept album NEWS, features four 14 minute tracks: North, East, West and South (hence NEWS). It was a melange of experimental semi-improvised jazz-fusion. Possiby not intended for mass consumption.

When does a song stop being a "song" and become something else.

Anything over say 6 minutes surely is an opus, a track, an album side, an artistic wank?

There's a reason why all the best songs in the world usually clock in <4 minutes. It's about structure, rhythm and attention span.

Kashmir is an exception, but the Ramones proved the rule.

It's not the length but what you do with it. Shorter Rules

Not necessarily true Rex, it depends what your goal is when creating music. If you're after something punchy, concise, and catchy, then yes, 3-4 minutes is probably the ideal length. However if you're trying to create atmosphere, tell a story, or create something really epic then extra length can be a necessary thing.
The idea of the 3 & 1/2 minute pop song has more to do with fitting into radio (and more recently video) programming schedules than any supposed ideal song length.

Very true.

Writing a song over 4 minutes these days pretty much kills your chances of it being heard on radio or seen on TV in its full form.

Though our politics are often different it seems we have more than a few things in common when it comes to music.

How about real short songs

Grindcore bands are famous for extremely short songs, some grind bands like
Agoraphobic Nosebleed have released 100 track albums with the average song being only 10 seconds.
