Victoria in bold bid to host NRL Grand Final

Wayne Bennett's comments aren't insular or Sydney centric and it's a viewpoint worth listening to. The NRL should not be flippant about taking it away from its traditional home. I can't help but agree with many in this thread though, that if ANZ is a construction zone we could move it as a special event.

It's a massive opportunity to use the event to advance the NRL's interest wherever it is held. Not just send it to a new town for a cash grab and to hope the media covers it well. They should have a series of short and long term growth initiatives in cities like Melbourne that the NRL negotiates with the state government.

Auckland sounds a little problematic though. Imagine a couple of teams make it who haven't won a premiership in decades and a lot of their fans can't make it due to costs, passports etc. I guess "tough titties" may be the response but I can imagine some uproar

Whoever suggested Perth for a GF has rocks in their heads.

Did you forget that ALL NRL teams are based in the eastern states and NZ? How many thousands of $$$ would it cost Joe Blow and his family of four to go to the GF. Airfares, accommodation plus time off work, school, etc. to watch a game that should never leave the eastern seaboard.

May as well have the FA Cup Final in the Maldive Islands.

 Cos the crowd in a potential Perth NRL GF wouldn't attract one local.

Eastern States League fans traveling to Perth for a GF is no different than West Aussie AFL fans traveling to Melbourne for the AFL GF. They do it every year and the 7 times Perth based teams have featured, have done so in number excess of 15000.

The Rail tunnel to Perth Airport will be completed in 2020.

Pro and Cons of potential NRL GF locations

Allianz Stadium
Pros: .GF remaining in Sydney, thus minor planning involved. Use of Sydney's corporate and entertainment infrastructures.
.Purpose built rectangular stadium with decent views from the wings.

Cons: .Smallest capacity out of any of the suggested options
.Ageing outdated amenity Not to be updated till after ANZ is back in operation.
.insuficiant quantity and quality of corporate facilities and suites for a GF.

SCG
Pros: .as above, benefits of Sydney and its corporate support.
.Tradition
.Superior and more numerous Corporate facilities and Suites than neighbouring Allianz Stadium.

Cons: .low capacity of 48 000.
.Oval shape with wide wings.
.horrible ground tier rake of only 10 degrees, exasperating the problematic sight lines from any orientation to the pitch.

Suncorp Stadium
Pros: .Best viewing experience (sight lines) for Rugby League in the world for a largish Stadium.
.Rugby League is part of Brisbanes very fabric
.Relatively centrally located
.Iconic venue with Rugby League specific to its lore

Cons: .smaller than ideal at 52500 with no serious talk of expanding to 60000.
.it may have the oldest corporate facilities and concourse amenity (besides Allianz Stadium) by 2019.

MCG
Pros: .Australias most storied Stadium, the closest we have to an unofficial national stadium.
.By far the biggest capacity at 100 000.
.largest quantity of corporate facilities and suites.
.Melbourne offers a similar level of hospitality and entertainment infrastructure to Sydney which Brisbane, Perth and Auckland can't match.
.centrally located with decent public transport.

Cons: .Oval pitch with is considered big even for crickey and Aussie Rules.
.Shallow ground tier rake of 12 degrees, not much better than the SCG.
.massive logistical hurdles if NRL GF falls on the same weekend as the AFL GF.

Eden Park
Pros: .Being New Zealand's primary city gives Auckland more clout, corporate, media and tourist strength than most cities of its size.
.A sporting culture not too alien to Rugby League.
.Gives a shot in the arm to strengthening international ties in the code and honours New Zealand's contribution to the domestic competition.
.the antiquated Western end Stand may have been replaced in time for an NRL GF.

Cons: .lowest capacity of the options outside of Sydney at 50 000 (61000 for 2011 RWC was temporary), boost capacity may be prohibitive for one off event.
.not an Oval but still an over sized field with poorer sight lines than Suncorp or Alliance.
.Shit public transport.

Perth Stadium
Pros: .state of the art, most modern stadium of the lot. Leading in its amenity for general seating and the corporate facilities and Suites.
.best player facilities, change rooms etc
.second highest capacity behind the MCG of 65000 for League, Union and Soccer.
.relatively central with dedicated public transport access.

Cons: perception of the tyranny of distance, people's hesitation at travel expense.
. Non Rugby League dominated sporting culture, still bigger than Melbournes.
. Oval pitch not ideal but smaller than MCG and much better steeper sight lines than MCG, SCG and half of Eden Park. Almost identical to the system at Wellingtons Westpac Stadium.

Would it be to any benefit of Perth Stadium in snaring a Grand Final that it is to be managed by the same mob that runs ANZ Stadium?

With ANZ out of action for several years I can see it being something like:
1 year Suncorp (heartland)
1 year MCG (expansion) - one year where the grand finals don't fall on the same weekend
1 Perth (if they're getting a new team which I doubt unfortunately :( )
If not Perth, 1 Auckland

Agree completely.

More and more I'm warming to the idea of NZ too. Eden Park is a brilliant venue and it'd show the NRL's dedication to NZ Rugby League, and that's important from a strategic growth standpoint, is a strong NZ is good for Australia as the better the Kiwis get, the more interest the trans-tasman tests get.

Agreed. 4 years away from Homebush so...

Brisbane
MCG
Auckland
Perth (The season before the Perth expansion side is added, play it at the new Perth Stadium, bundle tickets with season passes for the new Perth expansion side as well, ensuring a solid support base to build from)

But somehow the NRL management will f*ck this up and leave no-one happy:x

Thanks for that Thor.

The only one I wasn't aware of was the Macquarie Uni link. No wonder....it only became operating in 2009.

They're should be a real train line from central to Moore Park, the uni/Randwick then onto Maroubra/Chifley... Can't see it happening though (ever).

Edit - The light rail is better than nothing of course.

11,000 watching in Melbourne,What's, your point? Expansion team.:sarcasm:

Melbourne arent the ones waffling about tribalism, tradition and heartland as some justification for not modernising the game. Last night the old Queensland joined the nswrl comp line was trotted out on nrl360 as some justification for not taking the once in a lifetime opportunity to use the gf as a growth vehicle.
