Victorian RL Players

Melbourne Storm officials believe they might have found the next Israel Folau with the signing of 15-year-old local Richard Kennar to a long-term deal.

The year 10 student from Craigieburn stands 180cm, weighs more than 90kg and has starred for the club's under-18 team, which begins its SG Ball Cup finals campaign with a sudden-death clash against Penrith in Sydney on Saturday.

Kennar has made the leap from suburban rugby league to playing against the best young talent in NSW and his abilities have excited Storm.

He is one of 11 Victorians in the 17-man team that compiled a 7-2 win-loss record this season and coach Kim Williams predicted Kennar could go on to big things.

It's great to see Victorian players being developed. Hopefully we see them in the NRL in the next few years.

Didn't Digby Ioane (the union player) represent Victoria in RL as a junior?

Peter Wallace was born in Vic I think..

But yeah, would be good to see some of these young guys end up in the NRL.

A Melbourne junior team made it to the final of a nationwide comp last season defeating far more fancied teams from places like Newcastle and Woollongong.

Melbourne is creating young NRL players, but they've had to start comps from scratch so they're actually doing well.

The game is gaining traction down there, and this to me is the biggest tragedy about the cap issues and the way the NRL is determined to dismantle Melbourne.

It seems there is alot of ground work being done and the NRL want to make it as difficult as possible for the groundwork to have somewhere to go beyond a junior level.

But handicapping the game outside of QLD and NSW is something the NRL seems to revel in as you know yourself.

I stand corrected!

Yeh been great to see the Storm jnr teams doing so well and looks good for the future.

it's always interesting how fans define "juniors" is it people born in a certain place, where they played RL as a kid or is them joining the club at 15 classed as producing them? Everyone seems to have their own ideas about what constitutes "producing your own players"

It's a shame a lot of people on here can't see beyond their own clubs in all of this. The punishments have been dished out, but to be making the future a whole lot more difficult down there is wrong for a game that is allegedly trying to spread its wings.
