The touchies should be told your job is to watch for foward passes as they should be in better position than the ref who is usually behind or in front of the play and if they miss the blatant forward passes then they should be held accountable.
The touch judges *do* make calls on forward passes - dozens of times every game. Perhaps two or three of those result in a stoppage of play. The remainder of the decisions you never notice because they've decided it wasn't forward. Perhaps we should take the flag off them, give them a whistle and make it obvious when it's them making the call and not the ref. If play on then they give the play on signal instead of the ref. At least that way we wouldn't have people accusing them of not doing anything and all the Monday experts would know who to blame. But then we don't really know that they're not being held accountable now. After all, how many fans could name more than one or two touch judges anyway or would notice if one disappeared from first grade for a week or two?

I've seen examples of that, but they can't do it for passes which are obviously intentional passes, but the few occasions I've seen the normally 'bat ons' and are that obvious to skew around the rules.

Regardless, do we need the video refs to be involved in the game MORE? Let's not turn our sport into NFL where an 80 minute game lasts four hours.

Not only that but if a touch judge makes a wrong call and the ref blows the whistle... then the knives would be out for both of them and people would be screaming to get rid of touch judges all together because they overplayed their hand.

In NFL they "paint" virtual lines on the pitch to show first down mark, scrimmage line etc. Surely you could put one of these virtual lines lined up with the player, if he is stationary it is easy to see if the ball is caught in front of the line, if he is moving you can have the line move with him to see the same. The technology exists and already in use in NFL.
