Townsend is only a young fella too, for him to be giving someone like Nathan Friend a serve, thats ballsy. Good quality to have though, need that in this team.

:lol: Yeah loved that. Want to see much more of it in theory but in practice it could mean some of these guys have a sook and sulk in a corner, especially SJ.

My 2 cents -

- Tomkins is warming into it nicely now. Not long till he busts a side right open. Would like to see him go from dummy half a bit more too.

- Not much will get through that left edge defence this season. Mannering is an absolute colossus out there & with Townsend & Neilson too, thats very very solid.

- Johnsons kicking game was excellent. Good early tackle kicking and exposing an inexperienced fullback. Only blemish was his attempted 40/20 going out on the full. His defence was pretty decent too. Had big Taumalolo & Tariq Sims running at him all night.

- I too liked it when Townsend gave Friend a gobful for poor service. Nothing wrong with reminding your team-mates of the standards required.

- Impressed with Lousi starting. He's got something about him. He's probably not up to a whole lot of game time yet, but a couple of 15 -20 minutes bursts might work well.

- Props were excellent (especially considering Matulino was basically fouled out of the game).

Looking forward to Wellington this weekend. Be interesting to see what sort of turn out we get.

Totally agree. My question is - why can't they play like that every week? is it unrealistic to expect them to play like that every week (or even most weeks)?

Because of the speed the game is now played at, the middle of the field is the place to attack. If you can win the ruck, you just keep getting a roll on up the middle. The sooner we get our little fast men into dummy half off the back of a Rapira run and fast play the ball, we'll blitz them. I predict we will see less & less of the boring block plays and sweeping from a fullback as the season goes on.

I get the distinct impression Townsend has been instructed to lead, I have certainly seen him before games, grab the spine together and give instructions, Johnson, Tomkins and Friend all listening intently.

Pretty sure he was captain throughout his junior career.

Townsend they have a recruit who plays a similar game and who thinks he would fit in well alongside halfback Shaun Johnson.

"I think my style of play would suit his," Townsend says. "He's got that X-factor, flair and plays what's in front of him. I'm a bit more structured, calm. I like to tell people what to do."

I guess so for one season. But limiting one of our better (and more highly paid) players to a 30-40 min bench role is far from ideal. And it also limits the effectiveness of Friend in a way. That is why I've been saying all along that while I can understand why they brought him back for another year it actually creates a log jam. I think Leuluai is a better hooker than Friend anyway.
