Inglis, Sutton back for Souths

AAP
Tue 13th August, 4:24pm

South Sydney have received a huge boost ahead of Friday's crunch clash with Manly with Greg Inglis and John Sutton named in Michael Maguire's side.

Inglis has fully recovered from a knee injury sustained in the State of Origin decider but Sutton is back ahead of schedule after injuring his ankle against North Queensland two weeks ago.

The Rabbitohs are without Sam Burgess due to suspension but he's replaced by elder brother Luke Burgess, who plays his first game of the season.

Thomas and George Burgess are named on an extended bench along with exciting playmaker Luke Keary.

Really solid team. Glad Lurgess is back.

Expecting some really grubby tactics from Manly. I wonder if Fa'aoso will try and give GI brain damage again?

I think we can easily beat them in the forwards, they only have G Stewart and he's a ball player. Manly are missing a real workhorse with Watmough out so we need to use the Burgess twins to our full advantage.

Inglis is No.1 at Souths in more ways than one, says Toovey

Manly coach Geoff Toovey understands the importance of Greg Inglis to South Sydney. The Rabbitohs struggle without Inglis has matched Manly's poor run of form when they were without strike fullback Brett Stewart earlier this year.

Manly won just one match in the six games Stewart missed with a back injury midway through the season. They lost just the first game on his return but have gone on to win six consecutive games.

Similarly, South Sydney – who face Manly on Friday night – have only won one game in Inglis' four-game absence.

Toovey said he expected Inglis' return to spark the Rabbitohs in a comparable way Stewart did for his team. "We are expecting Greg Inglis to play," Toovey said. "Without him at the back they are a lot less potent. He is a real threat and is probably worth six to 12 points for them. All the top sides have got those quality fullbacks. Souths have missed Greg Inglis' threat at fullback. It makes a massive difference right across the park."

While Manly have been finding form, they are yet to beat a top-four side. Inglis starred, scoring a try when the teams last met in round seven. Manly players remembered the 20-12 defeat as a bruising encounter with five-eighth Kieran Foran declaring the match one of the fiercest tussles of the season.

"When we've played the top-four sides they have got the better of us," Foran said. "I think [the game against Souths] was one of the toughest games I've played. It was very physical.

"They are such a big pack and it's always going to be physical. I remember a lot of our guys were very sore after that game and it'll be no different on Friday."

Plenty has changed for Manly since their last encounter at Brookvale, mainly in the form of a rejuvenated Glenn Stewart. That South Sydney clash was his first after a long lay-off with a knee injury.

He has begun to find his best form, and sprang to life laying on four tries in his best performance of the season in Manly's 27-12 win against the Warriors on Sunday.

Foran praised the lock. "He hit a rare patch of form on the weekend," Foran said. "We will be looking for him to continue that form on Friday and put plays on for us.

"In my eyes he is the best ball-playing forward in the game. We're lucky because it's like having three halves in the side. He can pass, kick and create three-on-two opportunities and that's the beauty of having him out there. His combination with his brother goes from strength to strength."

Both teams will be without some firepower with Anthony Watmough and Sam Burgess missing. Toovey remained hopeful Watmough would only miss one week.

Justin Horo returns from a calf injury to replace Watmough.

GI to lift entire Bunnies squad: Maguire
By Steve Jancetic
AAP
Wed 14th August, 3:23pm

Greg Inglis' importance to South Sydney is obvious, but according to coach Michael Maguire, the biggest benefit in having the star fullback back on deck has no statistical measure.

"Bringing Greg back in brings a lot of confidence to the team and also a lot of experience as well," said Maguire, desperate to arrest the one-time premiership favourites two-game slide against Manly on Friday night.

"He's a great leader amongst the boys and the way he's developed in my time here is a real credit to him."

While halfback Adam Reynolds may be the brains and John Sutton the heart of a Rabbitohs side attempting to win the club's first premiership in 41 years, Inglis is clearly the pulse by which the Rabbitohs operate.

It was particularly telling during his four-week absence - when the Bunnies lost three games - that the side was a class below the other outfits in the top four considered genuine title fancies.

Other sides know his value too, as evidenced by the seemingly premeditated attack on the brilliant No.1 the last time he faced Manly, when three times he was dumped on his head.

It led to Maguire intimating he was concerned for the welfare of his star player.

The same concern prompted the coach to resist rushing Inglis back for last week's game against Melbourne, despite the obvious temptation to help get his side back on track.

"We've done a lot of testing and Greg's ticked off a lot of boxes along the way," Maguire said.

"I thought he could have played last week but we took that caution and made sure we've done everything possible to make sure he's ready.

"He's moved around, trained very well for the last week and he's really looking forward to playing and being back with the team."

The unexpected return of Sutton - who still has to pass a final fitness test on his injured ankle to play - means the clash against the Sea Eagles should indicate whether Souths are indeed slumping or just needed to get their star players back on the field.

Maguire seemed content that his group had the strength to push through the difficult stretch.

"It's a marathon," he said.

"We've gone through a tough time over the last few weeks but it shows the character in the team.

"Against Melbourne we showed some form and what we're capable of and we've just got to make sure we concentrate on the things we were doing, control the things we're capable of doing and play the way we can."

Manly Sea Eagles face huge test against South Sydney Rabbitohs despite recent stats, says NSW coach Laurie Daley

LAURIE Daley says the high-flying Sea Eagles face their biggest test of the season against the Rabbitohs on Friday, despite an avalanche of recent stats in Manly's favour.

Geoff Toovey's men have hit a purple patch, winning their last six straight to surge past Melbourne into third spot on the NRL ladder.

Meanwhile, former competition leaders South Sydney have lost three of their last four, coinciding with the loss of star fullback Greg Inglis (knee).

In the last month, the Sea Eagles have scored almost double the average points of the Rabbitohs (35 points per game to 17) and conceded an average of seven points less (14 points per game to 21).

However, NSW Origin coach and Test great Daley says Manly are in for a huge challenge in Friday night’s blockbuster at Bluetongue Stadium given their poor record against top teams.

The Sea Eagles haven’t notched a win against a top four side this year, with a round 10 draw over Melbourne their best result.
Conversely, South Sydney have won two of four against top four sides, including a round seven win over the Sea Eagles.

The Sea Eagles haven’t beaten a top six side in their unbeaten run, but accounted for last-placed Parramatta twice and the 15th placed Tigers.

“This is Manly’s big test. The real challenge is beating the good teams,” Daley said. “They need this win to prove to themselves that they are contenders and to build belief.”

Anthony Watmough will be a big loss for Manly.
“The loss of Anthony Watmough (knee, finals) is also a massive blow.”

According to Daley, the returns of Inglis and John Sutton (ankle) are huge boosts for South Sydney.

“When you’re playing the best sides you need your best players…

“John Sutton and in particular Greg Inglis just give everyone in the side so much confidence.

“Inglis attracts so much of the focus, which opens things up for other players.”

The Rabbitohs have dominated teams in the middle for much of the year, but their ability to repel opposition packs has plummeted in recent weeks.

South Sydney have conceded 1233 metres more than the Sea Eagles in the last four weeks (5989m to 4756m).

And the task won't get any easier against a Manly side overflowing with attacking talent.

"In Daly Cherry-Evans, Kieran Foran and Glenn Stewart, you have three great ball players, while Brett Stewart is one of the best tryscorers we've ever seen," Daley said.

Maguire confident Bunnies will emerge from doldrums
Date
August 15, 2013

Dominic Bossi
Sports reporter

South Sydney coach Michael Maguire has conceded a first minor premiership in 24 years may be out of their grasp, but he believes his team has proved it has the character to rebound from a tough period.

The Rabbitohs trail the Roosters by two points on the ladder, having led by four a month ago. Their drop in form dented hopes of a minor premiership but hasn't swayed Maguire from his hopes of a late resurgence this season.

''We're not focused about that [minor premiership] at all, we just want to make sure we get the performance on Friday [against Manly],'' Maguire said. ''That [finishing position] will sort itself out down the track.''

The Rabbitohs were favourites to finish top of the league before losing three of their past four games, and their dip in form could be compounded by a difficult finish to the season in which they play teams placed third (Sea Eagles), fifth (Bulldogs) and first (Roosters) in three of their final four games.

Maguire said their recent poor form was a glitch that could strengthen the bond within the team. ''We've obviously gone through a bit of a tough time the last few weeks but again that shows the character of the team and as I said, against Melbourne we showed some form and what we're capable of,'' he said. ''We've just got to make sure we concentrate on the things we're doing and control the things we're capable of doing and play the way we can.''

Souths received a timely boost with the return of star fullback Greg Inglis and the expected inclusion of captain John Sutton. Maguire confirmed Inglis would start at fullback, allowing Nathan Merritt to return to his favoured position on the wing. Inglis was on the cusp of playing in last week's loss to Melbourne Storm but sat out largely as a precaution. ''We've done a lot of testing and Greg has ticked off a lot of boxes along the way,'' Maguire said. ''I thought Greg could have played last week but again we took that caution to make sure he's done everything possible to be ready.''

Sutton must pass a late fitness test to start on Friday night but Maguire expects he will play some part as scans revealed his injury was not as severe as initially expected. ''He's training well so again we'll check in training,'' he said. ''The damage to his ankle wasn't as bad as what was first thought, we had the scan and a lot of positive news from that and again that's a credit to him on how hard he's worked to get back in.''

Rabbitohs hoping Greg Inglis and John Sutton come to the rescue

SOUTH Sydney coach Michael Maguire believes the return from injury of Greg Inglis and John Sutton has restored the team's self-belief for tomorrow night's crunch match against Manly at Gosford.

But Maguire conceded the loss of Sam Burgess to a two-match suspension for the now infamous "squirrel" tackle leaves a big hole to fill in both defence and attack.

"Sam is a quality player and a quality person and he's obviously disappointed in the action," Maguire said. "He's now going to learn a big lesson and (is) focused on making sure of playing to his capabilities. He's also a major part of what we're doing -- it was just an unfortunate incident."

Maguire said the team had done it tough in recent weeks without Inglis and Sutton.

"But that shows the character in this team -- against Melbourne, we showed what we're capable of," he said.

"The season is very much a marathon and it takes total commitment from the entire playing group for a club to be a contender."

With the big names out, South Sydney slipped behind the Sydney Roosters in the race for the minor premiership. "It is great to have those two players back, but right now our focus is to ensure we improve on the effort we put in against Melbourne (last week)," he said.

Any doubts about either Inglis in particular, or Sutton, who will undergo a fitness test today, were quickly put to rest by Maguire yesterday.

"We've done a lot of testing and Greg's ticked off a lot of boxes along the way," he said.

"I thought Greg probably could have played last week, but again, we took the precaution of making sure he's done everything possible to make sure he's ready.

"A player of Greg's capability is always important to any team.

"Bringing Greg back in brings a lot of confidence to the team and also a lot of experience as well.

"He's also a great leader now amongst the boys; we're clearly looking forward to getting him and John (Sutton) back."

South Sydney could have done with both Inglis at the back and Sutton at five-eighth as the Storm crossed for four tries in a 26-8 demolition of the Rabbitohs last week.

Although Sutton has been named at five-eighth opposite Manly's Kieran Foran, Maguire says only a fitness test today on a suspect ankle will determine whether he starts the game, or is used off the bench.

Conversely, the Sea Eagles, who looked to be right at home at Gosford a week ago in a 27-12 win against the Warriors, with Brett Stewart and David Williams each crossing for two tries, will miss a spark in defence with the loss of Anthony Watmough.

In the corresponding game a year ago at Gosford, Inglis and Sutton lifted Souths to a spirited 20-12 win.

"As another game, this is a really important one for us, we want to not only find form, but to continue in the form I know we are capable of playing," Maguire said.

"The last time we met was a great physical match and we're expecting exactly the same."
