Currently:

Souths $1.48

Dragons $2.65

Saints are an ordinary unit but nowhere near as ordinary as the Knights who are no better than NSW CUP!! The Knights were just a training run--I can't believe we didn't put 70+ pts on them!

Dugan will probably be out which robs Saints of their best player.

Another easy game.

Doyen you are getting over confident. If the boys get over confident they'll be in for a shock.

The Dragons have good players and I think they will lift.

Remember last season when we lost games we should have won?????

70pts, geez you're a hard marker.

If the boys are hungry, focussed and level headed I think we will win reasonably comfortably by about 16-18 points.

You never know though.

Looking good Southsport.

Yep says R20 here:lol::lol::lol:

I reckon we can win by 14 points.

Thank goodness ref isn't Cecchin. Lucky we haven't had him yet. If we get Feckin against Tigers in Round 9 I'll collapse.

Our main ref this Sunday is Maxwell.

Any news on Inglis' sternum, guys? Could that be why Oldfield was named?

I am confident GI will play. He will be fine to go.

Oldfield would just be a back up.

Even though Madge normally names an 18 man squad on Tuesday come game day there is 20 guys who warm up before the match. So we have 3 on standby.

I don't read anything into Oldfield in the 19 as its normal.

The Red & Green vs The Red V

Tue 15th March, 01:13PM

Three proud traditions collide on Sunday afternoon at the SCG when the South Sydney Rabbitohs take on the St George Illawarra Dragons in Round 3 of the NRL Telstra Premiership.

After a long-standing and proud rivalry stretching back to 1921 – the year St George entered the top-flight NSWRL competition – in 1999, a new era was welcomed when the Rabbitohs took on the newly-formed St George Illawarra Dragons for the first time, a merger between the St George Dragons and the Illawarra Steelers who had entered the Premiership in 1982.

Appropriately, the match was played at the SCG – the sight of so many clashes between the two Clubs – and saw the men in Red and Green emerge 25-24 victors in a thrilling encounter.

But the rivalry first began on the 25th June, 1921, when South Sydney – featuring legendary Club names such as Benny Wearing, Howard Hallett, and Alf ‘Smacker’ Blair – first faced a very different looking Saints outfit, kitted out in red and white striped jerseys at Moore Park’s Sports Ground. Souths would emerge 20-9 victors on the day, with winger Wearing and Gordon Vaughan both snaring try-scoring doubles.

The clashes would continue through to 1998 and would include five Grand Final appearances (1927, 1949, 1953, 1965 and 1971) – the Rabbitohs emerging victorious in three of the deciders.

In all, the Rabbitohs met the St George Dragons 163 times, winning 69 clashes and going down in 92 while drawing 2.

Ironically, it would be a Grand Final loss against the Dragons that would prove a pivotal point in the rivalry’s history though.

In 1965, the Grand Final may have been won by the Saints 12-8, but the legacy of that game, played on 18 September 1965 in front of a crowd quite literally hanging from the rafters, has gone down in Australian Rugby League folklore. The match would also prove a significant moment in Rabbitohs history – signalling the beginning of a new era for the Club.

On display that season and that day was the next crop of South Sydney super-stars – players who would take the Club to four Premierships in five years between 1967 and 1971 upon the instalment of limited-tackle football in ’67.

Officially, the crowd was posted at a ground record 78,056, however, with overwhelming public interest in the match between the at-the-time nine-straight Premiership winning Dragons, and the brash young challengers from South Sydney, ticket supply was exhausted well in advance of kick-off, and the real crowd figure is estimated to be somewhere in the region of 90,000 – some double today’s official ground capacity.

If the unofficial estimate is true, the crowd would be the largest crowd that South Sydney has ever played in front of – eclipsing the 2014 Grand Final (83,833).

By 1pm, police ordered the SCG gates to be shut on the grounds of safety. But that didn’t stop thousands of Sydney-siders improvising solutions to their Grand Final dilemma.

Rugby League revellers intent on seeing the Rabbitohs take on the might and experience of the Dragons scaled walls, climbed grandstands, positioned themselves on the playing surface – mere metres from play – in an attempt to watch the final game of the season.

On the other side of the joint-venture, the Rabbitohs and the Illawarra Steelers first met on the 14th March 1982, in Round 3 of the NSWRL Premiership at Wollongong – the Steelers running away with a 20-10 victory.

In all, the two sides met on 31 occasions with the Rabbitohs winning 12 of those encounters, while 25 games have been played against the merged St George Illawarra side. The Rabbitohs have won 10 of those clashes.

The two Clubs also play contest the annual Charity Shield - a match which has unofficially opened the Rugby League season for over 30 years.

The Rabbitohs will take on the St George Illawarra Dragons at the SCG this Sunday. Kick-off is at 4pm. Click here to purchase your tickets!

Maguire’s Insights – Rd 3, 2016

Rabbitohs Head Coach, Michael Maguire, has given his insights into this week’s Round 3 clash against the St George Illawarra Dragons on Sunday at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Coming off the back of an impressive 48-6 victory over the Newcastle Knights, Round 3 of the Telstra Premiership will see the South Sydney Rabbitohs take on the St George Illawarra Dragons at the Sydney Cricket Ground – a venue filled with rich Rugby League history and significant meaning for both Clubs.

Hosting close to 1,400 top-grade Rugby League matches, including the NSWRL Grand Finals from 1913 to 1987, the hallowed turf of the Sydney Cricket ground is an integral part of the Rugby League story – especially for the Rabbitohs and Dragons, with the two sides competing against each other in five grand finals – 1927, 1949, 1953, 1965 and 1971 – at the historic ground.

Despite only hosting a handful of Rugby League clashes a season in recent times, the tradition and significance of playing at the venue has been forgotten by none.

Head Coach, Michael Maguire, discussed the feelings held by the players in regards to playing at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

“For our players it’s definitely a privilege to play on such a historic ground.

Have you jumped on board yet? Join the team in 2016 by becoming a Rabbitohs Member NOW!

“The boys really enjoy going back to the SCG. I’d love to be able to jump out there with the players.”

Although, the match against St George Illawarra is technically an away game for the Red and Greens, Maguire is excited by the prospect of Rabbitohs fans turning out in the masses due to the grounds close proximity to the South Sydney area.

“We’re in a bit of home territory around the Souths area,” said Maguire.

“It’s always good to see a lot more red and green than the opposition, so I’m looking forward to seeing our crew get out there.”

Maguire is adamant that the Dragons will be up to the occasion and present his side with a challenge come Sunday.

“We’re playing a team that are after two points just like we are,” said Maguire.

“They’ve got quality across the park and we’ve got a lot of players that we need to watch. We need to be well and truly switched on.”

Johnston: Souths & Saints a Great Rivalry

The Souths and St George tradition isn’t lost on any of the proud Members and supporters of both Clubs, but it’s not lost on the players either – just ask Rabbitohs winger, Alex Johnston.

Johnston will line up on the Red and Green flank this Sunday at the Sydney Cricket Ground when the Rabbitohs face a Dragons outfit looking to get their winning account for season 2016 started.

“Whenever we verse the Dragons it’s always a heated battle,” said Johnston.

“We have a great rivalry – especially here at the SCG. I’ve played a couple of times and every time it’s a good game.”

The Rabbitohs will be looking to build on their first two victories of the year after overcoming both the Roosters and the Knights in consecutive weeks.

Johnston and his teammates are proud of their performances so far, citing an increase in belief and a positive pre-season as the reason for their well-received start.

“Just a lot of belief and confidence in ourselves,” said Johnston when asked what the mindset at Redfern is.

“We know that if we play our best footy that we’re going to win – that’s the mindset that we’re going out (with) each game.

“Really it’s just come down to our pre-season. We’ve trained really well and we’ve just got confidence and belief within each other.”

Hunt: Madge Has Helped With My Confidence

Rabbitohs centre, Hymel Hunt, has cited the influence of Head Coach Michael Maguire in boosting his confidence leading into this Sunday’s Round 3 clash against the Dragons at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Despite having previously played limited first grade for the Gold Coast Titans and the Melbourne Storm, Hunt is feeling more confident in his abilities than ever thanks in part to the help of his Rabbitohs mentor.

“Madge has helped me build my confidence over the pre-season,” said Hunt.

“I’ve taken it into the first two Rounds, and definitely this third Round I’ll be taking my hands to the opportunity.”

Hunt has shown positive signs in both attack and defence during his two Premiership games with the Club so far – a stint that produced a brilliant four-pointer against the Knights last week after he took a plucked a bomb out of the air to score.

Classic SCG Match: 1999 v Dragons

Words & Video: Tom Skolarikis

As the Rabbitohs prepare to take on the St George Illawarra Dragons at the SCG this Sunday, we throw back to the 1999 classic encounter between the two Clubs at the same venue!
Round 4 of the 1999 season saw a new chapter in Rabbitohs v Dragons history, with Souths taking on the newly-formed St George Illawarra for the very first time and coming away with a one-point win.

Despite the clash coinciding with NSW State election-day, a crowd of over 15,000 were on hand to witness history as the Rabbitohs emerged triumphant over that year’s eventual Grand Finalists, St George Illawarra by 25-24.

Boasting names such as Craig Wing, Mark Carroll, Darrell Trindall, Julian O’Neill, Sean Garlick, Matt Parsons and Ian Rubin – among others – the Rabbitohs were a strong outfit intent on making an impression having already downed the Bulldogs and Raiders in the first three Rounds.

But the Dragons were no less keen. With the likes of Trent Barrett, Nathan Brown, Nathan Blacklock, and current Dragons coach Paul McGregor all wearing the Red V, the stage was set for a classic encounter.

Rabbitohs halfback, Trindall, was in fine form – scoring two tries and orchestrating a number of opportunities before kicking the match-winning field-goal.

A fresh-faced Craig Wing meanwhile had a magic moment of his own when he took a no-look pass from winger, Lee Hookey to score in the corner, while Chris Caruana also scored a memorable solo four-pointer.

To re-live the match, please press play on the video player.

Dragons v Rabbitohs

SCG, Sunday 20 March

Kick-off – 4.00pm

After starting the season with impressive all-round performances in the first two weeks of the Telstra Premiership, the Rabbitohs will be looking to register their third victory when they take on the St George Illawarra Dragons on the hallowed turf of the Sydney Cricket Ground on Sunday.

Having recorded victories over St George Illawarra in their previous four encounters, the Rabbitohs will be looking to continue their recent run of success against the Red V and build upon their Round 2 performance, which saw the Red and Greens secure a 48-6 victory over the Newcastle Knights.

Head Coach Michael Maguire was pleased with his team’s victory over the Novocastrians, but emphasised that week-to-week development is a necessity.

Click here to see Maguire’s line-up for Round 3.

“It was very thorough from the boys, we just need to make sure we maintain the things we’re doing well for next week,” said Maguire.

“They’re playing good footy for each other and we’ve got to build on that this week at training.”

The clash between the traditional rivals will bring together two sides who have had vastly different starts to the season on the most historic stage in the game. The Dragons will be looking to bounce back from two losses to the Melbourne Storm and Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks. Despite not claiming any premiership points in the first two rounds of the season though, the joint venture has shown glimpses of brilliance.

“They’ve got a lot of quality across the park – we know what they are capable of doing,” said Maguire.

“We’re playing against a team that are coming off what they have. They’ve probably had a fair chat amongst themselves about what they want to do, so we’ve got a lot to play for each week.

“The fact that there’s competition in our team makes things really enjoyable in the organisation.”

Although the two teams might be sitting at different ends of the ladder early in the season, the historic nature of the encounter will undeniably add to the passion for both sides.

With South Sydney and St George competing in five Grand Finals before the Dragons amalgamated with the Illawarra Steelers, the significant history between the two sides should not be underestimated.

The Rabbitohs and Dragons have already come together once this year in the Charity Shield, with the Rabbitohs securing a tight 18-14 victory over the Saints, illustrating just how close Sunday’s game will be.

The Rabbitohs will take on the St George Illawarra Dragons again at the SCG this Sunday. Kick-off is at 4pm. Click here to purchase your tickets!

Spotlight: The halves

Once again all eyes will be on the halves for the Rabbitohs. The combination of Cody Walker and Luke Keary shone last week against the Knights, with the duo setting up three tries and scoring one between them, playing an instrumental part in the 48-6 victory. The newly formed pairing will be looking to improve even more.

On the other side of the spectrum, Dragons halves Gareth Widdop and Benji Marshall will be looking to improve upon their Round 2 performance against the Sharks, a match where the Red V were unable to cross the try-line. The Dragons were only able to post two-points in the game, courtesy of a penalty goal. Without a doubt, both Widdop and Marshall will be looking to assert their authority early.

NYC

Dragons v Rabbitohs

SCG, Sunday 20 March

Kick-off – 1.45pm

The David Penna-coached Rabbitohs under 20s side will go in search of their second win of the 2016 season on Sunday when they take on the St George Illawarra Dragons in Round 3 of the competition at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

The Rabbitohs grabbed their first win of the 2016 season last week after downing the Newcastle Knights by 28-14 at ANZ Stadium in sweltering conditions.

While the first half saw the lead change a number of times, the Rabbitohs would outmuscle the Newcastle outfit in the second half by taking advantage of a number of opportunities to score. Winger Tom Perrin helped his side to victory with two tries to his name.

Meanwhile, the Dragons will be all riled up leading into the clash following two consecutive losses to the Melbourne Storm and the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks.

The Rabbitohs are firmly in their sights now, and with momentum behind the Red and Green’s and the Dragons looking to breathe fire to kick-start their season, this is a match-up not be missed.

Get out to the SCG early on Sunday to cheer-on the future stars of South Sydney against the Dragons!

South Sydney NRL coach Michael Maguire has hailed the new skills in the armoury of his strike forward Sam Burgess.

The British powerhouse has made an impressive return to the NRL following his patchy one-year stint in rugby, where he still managed to add some weapons to his arsenal.

"He's definitely cracked a few new skills since he's been away," Maguire said.

"He's been a great addition to what we're doing, you can see it in the offloads."

Burgess had a hand in three tries in South Sydney's 48-6 flogging of Newcastle last Saturday - one from a spectacular offload and two others as a result of long cut-out passes.

He's also averaging more than 150 metres per game and has broken through four would-be tackles, highlighting the fact he seems to have lost none of the ball-running skills he possessed before shifting to the centres in the 15-man game.

"There's a lot of improvement in Sam's game. He's come back in a real good frame of mind about his football," Maguire added.

"He looks at it and he knows there are areas in his game that he wants to improve on. Whether it's through the defence or attack, he's come out in form."

Despite Burgess' willingness to create opportunities by throwing the ball around, his ability to pick his moment has still seen the Rabbitohs complete at 85 per cent in the opening two rounds.

Again, it's something that Maguire sees the 27-year-old leading the pack with ahead of their third round clash with St George Illawarra at the SCG on Sunday.

"We're mindful of the games we have been able to control quite well with the ball," he said.

"He's one that knows consistency is a big key and he wants to improve on the two games he has played."
