Yeah, he asked for a release after failing to break into first grade this year. It's a pity to see him go, but all the best to him at Newcastle.

I assume it is an immediate release. I'd expect to see him on the left wing for Newcastle very very soon.

Released today, so I guess it is immediate. This from NZ Herald :

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/section/4/story.cfm?c_id=4&objectid=10441316

Winger Cooper Vuna is to pursue his National Rugby League career at Newcastle after being released by the New Zealand Warriors today.

Vuna, 19, has made just five appearances for the Warriors since becoming the club's youngest first-grade player in 2004.

He was due to be off-contract at the end of the year, and chief executive Wayne Scurrah said he had asked for a release.

"Cooper hasn't been able to break into our NRL side on a regular basis and has asked us for a release to join the Knights," Scurrah said.

"We're sorry to see him go and wish him all the best with his goal to play more NRL football in the future."

Vuna was just 17 years and 47 days old when he made his NRL debut against Parramatta on August 21, 2004.

His last first-grade appearances was off the bench in the round 23 encounter with North Queensland in Auckland last August.

This season, he has played seven times for the Auckland Lions in the New South Wales Premier League, scoring four tries.

Ohwell, im sure there's another 5-6 young backs running around in NZ that will be better...and may actually stay with the Warriors lol.

I was gunna ask whether Start would get a run soon..but after seeing the players Cleary has used this year, i think ill just let it go lol.

Pretty astonishing that a guy can break into first grade at such an absurdly young age and yet never really improve from there.

I wish him all the best, but given his lack of progress I can't be too harsh on the management for this call.

Given what opportunities?

Makes you wonder if everything was/is 100% upstairs!

Sucks, but realistically he was never going to make first-grade this year unless three or four of our wingers were injured. Seemed Malo Solomona was ahead of him down the chain as well. I agree with Theirry though, he debuted at such a young age but has done SFA since so it's probably no major loss. Hope he does well for the knights though.

Has he got any potential at all or is he just another dud signing like Russell Richardson was for us (and a host of other players)?

How can you ask if he'll be a dud?

He is only 19, has potential, could be anything.

It is a gamble, atleast not an expencive one...

You are absolutely on the nail Jono, he has a ton of potential. Just needs someone to
get into his head space and realise that potential.

Good luck to him over there.

We will all watch with interest.

By all accounts, not playing well enough at lower levels to warrant a call up.

Up until this year warriors not in the 18 were playing in bartercard - Vuna was for sure one of the best players in the comp. He sH*t on most players to be correct - shown heaps on natural talent and dead set should of being given more opportunties - especially since he's a wing - he gots lots to offer particularly on attack.
Shiat vatuvei being given a spot permanently yet he still makes basic errors pretty much every game.

He's not perfect but to say he didnt warrant a callup - did you base this on watching him play or was it the fact he didnt get a call-up???
He's being in the system for so long - why not give him a go before super-ordinary players such as todd byrne. What a waste. It is only the wing position

Heard rumours of bad attitude/bad behaviour crap - but cant be that bad havent seen him in the papers or caught being a drunken idiot.

He will be used by the Knights some time during the next month or two??

This is the biggest bunch of sh*t ever.

Why the f**k did we sign Vuna last year if we then go and sign Crockett.

Can anyone honestly tell me that Crockett is a better player than Vuna. Vuna's skill set is better than any of our wingers.

Whoever said Vuna wasn't good enough obviously didn't watch last years games.

So yay. I'm completely ripped for Vuna. And I'm f**king grumpy now.

And what is with all of our fans saying that none of our players are good enough for f**king first grade? If Fai was in any other team he would be playing in the NRL by now and that is a fact. Who wants a bet we see Vuna in the NRL in the next month? Just like Talapapa is ...and doing bloody well at that.

Hard out,

you shouldnt have to buy reject aussie wingers - especially not in New Zealand not with all the pacific island talent.
I was pissed when we signed crockett - though he's a decent wing. But byrne before vuna. F off!
I think fai has to be included over the next few weeks too - maybe he should go to an aussie club and play jim beam cup for 4 years gain aussie citzenship and then cleary will sign him up and play him every week.
