There's nothing racist or AFL about tax payers paying for a sport they don't really play, besides you said that's NOT what tax payers should be paying for, yet here we are... I'm not saying it's right, but F**k me if NRL can't catch a break, when the rival code gets every leg up thru govt to succeed
I sometimes wonder if people actually want rugby league to succeed.

Who gives a crap if governments invest in our sport, or if our leaders want to shoot for the stars and have stupidly high barometers for what financial success looks like.

Have people forgotten the Gallop years that quickly? The games in the best position it’s ever been and instead of resting on its laurels it wants to keep that sustain success going by any means. I fail to see how this is by any metric a bad thing.

Yes the pencil neck, made horrible decisions, super conservative to the point of getting zero done, at least PVL and abdo, have the right mix of effort and bullish arrogance, to like you said shoot for the stars, while being conservative

More money means more investment to future proof the game.

5 years ago the game had no investments, no cash in the bank and was at the mercy of broadcasters alone.

Now whilst broadcasters still hold a lot of the power, the game itself has grown back its balls pre Super League War and is in a position to command a few things because it finally has cash in the bank and investments making revenue.

Onward and upwards.

Bring on WA Bears, PNG, South Is NZ, Western Corridor, Adelaide over time and make every single existing club financially strong and able to make their own money outside of tv deal cash. Start investing a bit more into clubs like Raiders, Newcastle, Cowboys so they can upgrade their facilities etc and be able to compete against the Broncos, Roosters and Storm.

I get all my information about afl from the peanut gallery on LU.

I wouldn't have a clue what they do otherwise.

The peanut gallery are obsessed with fumbleball.

Most people 'care' because they won't to see expansion.

At the moment this is looking less likely every day. Politically this sort of move will give RL a bad rep with locals also.

If I was cynical, I'd say the NRL are actively conspiring not to expand.

They approached NRL under McGowan government pre-2020 and approached Bears in 2022.

Don’t be a twat and think you know things that you’re actually clueless about.

They approached the NRL and suggested they fund and operate a club? If you're right, and that they actually approached the NRL to fund a team, why is it that in 2022 they sad they wouldn't be leading or responsible for it?

"Although the State Government won't be leading the bid or responsible for a potential franchise, we are confident that there will be a strong and compelling case for a WA-based team.

Are you suggesting the Bears was the 3rd party bidder in this situation, and if so, why were the Bears trying to whore themselves out to PNG or wherever else would take them?

Since you guys are so in the know and deeply involved in the discussions, why did none of you post that the bid had been rejected until it came out in the media? Why did none of you know about the $120m asking price?

Let's not forget, it's Vlandy's job to extract as much money as he can. You only get one chance with a keen WA Govt. They're big boys, if they don't like it they'll knock him back and end up meeting somewhere in the middle.

What do people want PVL to do? Not negotiate hard on the game's behalf?

The same people who bag him for not negotiating the tv deal are now bagging him for negotiating with the bid teams

There's negotiating and there's embarrassing the game. In this case, he's embarrassed the game. Going out and begging govts to fund teams is embarrassing.

If $120M from the state was plausible (it's not), the Govt should demand a golden share of team, if not outright ownership.

And completely say on the Bears being involved without any NRL recourse

A question for those with 'sources': why didn't you tell us V'landys went to the WA government asking for $120 million?
Maybe some members were privately messaged on here a few days ago with a message highlighting something like this was cooking and that it was a few weeks old already…
