WA Election 2025: Liberals to bring an election fight over Western Bears NRL side

Perth’s proposed NRL side has become an election issue, with Liberal leader Libby Mettam ruling out cutting an expensive taxpayer-funded deal to secure a western team.
In what will set up a post-election political fight over the funding, Ms Mettam has told The West Australian Premier Roger Cook needed to be open with WA about what he is willing to pay to bring a side west.
In revelations in east coast media this week, Mr Cook reportedly had discussions with Australian Rugby League boss Peter V’Landys in the final days before caretaker mode started on February 5.
It is understood that as part of the fresh round of talks, the NRL finalised its three key demands, including $120 million licence fee to join the premiership, grassroots investment and a $200m upgrade of HBF Park for a team facility.
Ms Mettam seized on the reports, accusing the Premier of using taxpayers to “fund his hobby”.
“Is this seriously the priority of Roger Cook? It’s totally appalling to learn he was having a secret meeting with Sydney businessmen just weeks before an election,” Ms Mettam said.
Cyclone Zelia to reach category 5 system on Thursday before crossing coast, bringing destructive winds
“At its most basic our government must ensure quality accessible health care, ensuring you are safe and that you can afford a roof over your head. This is my priority.
”WA deserves a rugby team, but we should not be handing hundreds of millions of dollars to east coast businessmen to secure it.”
The Liberals would not rule out making some form of payment, but it is understood the stadium upgrades were deemed unnecessary, given rugby teams currently play games there, while no other team was required to pay licence fee.
Under a proposal to bring WA into the NRL, the North Sydney Bears would be relocated to Perth, and be rebadged as the “Western Bears”.
But a private consortium — lead by Cash Converters founder Peter Cumins — was rejected by the NRL, with a preference to cutting a deal with the State Government instead.
WA Election 2025: Labor MP Paul Lilburne resorts to name-calling opponent
Speaking to The Daily Telegraph, Mr V’landys said the talks with the State Government had been “very positive”.
“I have been talking to the WA premier and I am very comfortable and confident with where we are at,” he said.
“I appreciate there is an election on (in Western Australia), but I’m confident after the election we will come to an arrangement.”
Calling the side “Roger’s Rugby Team”, Ms Mettam called for the Premier to be transparent over what funding he would commit to secure the Western Bears.
“With an election weeks away, voters deserve to know how much Labor is planning to give some Sydney businessmen for Roger’s Rugby Team,” she said.
“A Mettam Liberal Government will fight to bring a team here, but we will not be signing a cheque for hundreds of millions when we have the worst hospital system in the country.
“When we have 2011-level real wages, the worst hospitals in the country, and the worst housing market in the country, there is no bigger misplaced priority than Roger’s Rugby Team.
“WA Labor cannot treat voters as mugs – we deserve to know what has been promised to bring Roger’s Rugby Team to WA.”
It's pretty hard to argue with her. PVL's taking the piss and the WA government would be mugs to fall for it.

If the numbers being thrown around in the media are anywhere near close to the truth, the demands the NRL are making of Perth are ridiculous, the NRL is trying to use taxpayers dollars to cover their business expenses, and what the NRL is offering in return for that money is insulting.

WA's best move would be to make a reasonable final offer then bide time their time if the NRL refuses. You gotta know when it's best to walk away.

Deepends on the detail.

Stadium upgrade, nothing wrong with that, perth is falling behind other cities for Rectangular stadium facilities and 13 years now since stage 1 HBF rebuild happened, about time for stage2!
CofE, WA govt has funded these for pretty much every sport except RL so again well within reason
License fee, if they are paying anything for this then it is outrageous abuse of tax payer money. NRL had the chance to get a license fee from the Western Bears and turned it down. No way Govt should be paying it.
Grassroots funding, improving SHS program and matching NRL grassroot funding 1:1 seems reasonable and on par with what AFL and Tassie Govt are doing for that new club
Free rental of HBF, bit of a stretch but if it makes the club more sustainable at beginning we can wear it

So all in all if the Nov SMH article is accurate then there isnt too much there that a State govt flush with cash shouldn't be doing.

So is it going to happen or not?

That's the question. If no, then Abdo should get on a plane to Christchurch quick smart.

It'll happen. cook will win the election with a comfortable majority, they'll iron out any last hurdles and will be announced in April/May. Maybe even at the double header on 12th April. Seems a logical time for Vlad and Abdo to fly over and actually show their faces in WA.

If I was a betting man it’s 99.99 percent chance

Deal is been agreed too in terms of money waiting for cook to get re elected and he is paying just over a dollar and the coalition is ten to one

This Govt is big into sports tourism, wouldn't surprise me if they aren't trying to wheel and deal some other stuff alongside the Bears License like test matches and magic weekend into the future. With a 27k HBF you could hold MW at both HBF and Optus over the three days.

Strange borderline nonsensical take. You negotiate to the point both parties are content with result. The fact nrl will fund the club for years means they are in fact spending from their own coffers.

meanwhile funding for stadium upgrade which will eventually get upgraded anyways because all infrastructure has a use by date and funding for junior sport which is a great initiative and should be applauded is money well asked for.

west Aussie gov and businesses benefit from tourism uplift. Whatever that value is, is better than what it is now because there’s no club and therefore no away supporters to attract outside a few novelty games.

No mention of license fee because why would nrl pay for a license fee for a club that nrl are paying for?

Cook is almost right, 90% is too high but asking a government to stump up cash for a stadium when teams, are playing out of the likes of Cronulla and Jubilee oval is a joke.

I feel for both Perth and Bears fans but not the peanut gallery.

Jesus - some hard talk from the Premier "the deal is off" .... I hope its just posturing for the election.

I thought the stadium upgrades and CoE had already been agreed?

Seems like what was in the paper doesn't match what was discussed prior between the NRL and state government? Have the NRL moved the line again post Cummins?
