Irish Star To Skipper WA Reds

Irishman Shayne McMenemy will be the inaugural captain of WA Reds when they contest the secondtier Jim Beam Cup before bidding to join the National Rugby League after 2011.
Second-rower McMenemy has moved to Perth after five years with English Super League club Hull.

Local stalwarts and likely first teamers Isaac Thomas and Jon Phipps will assist him with leadership duties.
Perth has been a rugby league outpost since the demise of the Perth Reds after the 1997 season but WA returns to the national fold, albeit not the premier level, on March 29 when the Reds play Chester Hill in Sydney.

The new team will remain in Sydney to play Erina and Campbelltown the following two weeks before playing their first home game, against Cronulla at Members Equity Stadium on April 19.

The Jim Beam Cup is a 13-team competition played over 22 rounds. The Reds will finish the regular season with a home game against Chester Hill on September 6.

Coach Chris Dever, who played for the original Reds, said the new team would play two pre-season games at North Beach, against the Sydney Bulls on March 1 and South Logan on March 8.

The Reds have concluded sponsorship deals totalling $400,000 and will soon announce a naming rights agreement.

Despite the encouraging balance sheet, Dever said the emphasis of the competition was on developing, rather than buying, success because a points system restricted the number of big-name players teams could recruit.

He said McMenemy was an excellent choice as the club’s hallmark player because vast experience complemented his ability.

“He’s been at the top level in England for the past eight years,” he said. “He’s a big, strong, ballplaying forward with a decent kick.

“He’s the kind of player who can break the line and create opportunities for others.”

Joel Rawlins and Mick Small have been recruited from the Newcastle district and Perth products Phipps and Tyrone Coppedge have been lured back from Queensland club South Logan.

Dever said the Reds would not be the biggest team but would try to make up for a lack of brute force with mobility.

Players had been preparing since October for WA’s return to mainstream rugby league.

“A change in the interchange rule will also help,” he said.

“The number of substitutions per game is down to 10 from 12 so clubs can’t go with too many big players anymore because they need an early rest.”

The Reds’ training squad of 36 will be cut to 25 in three weeks.

This is better coverage than the Sydney JBC teams get (obviously in a much more crowded RL market!) so congratulations to the Reds management.

Aside from the couple of errors (it's "Souths Logan" not "South Logan" - and JBC is the third teir - though these are mistakes I've some Sydney RL journos make) it's fantastic to see RL back in the WA media.

Here, here. The West have been particulalry bad at covering any RL for the past few years so it is great to see the Reds breaking some of that down.

im pretty sure the JBC being a 2nd tier comp is a deliberate mistake, not many people would know its a 3rd tier comp over here.....so we just roll with it ;)

I can't get over how positive things seem to be going in the West. This is a small step but hopefully we will start to see more clubs pop up over the next few years, it once was a 16 team comp over their was is not?

best of luck to WA RL! Where will they be playing their home matches out of?

Members Equity Stadium, by far the best stadium for RL in the West. Proaably the best ground of any JBC team I would think?

Corporate:
Three function rooms, 34 corporate boxes and 13 executive suites
Fans:
For sporting fixtures Members Equity Stadium is capable of accomodating up to 18,156 patrons. Reserved seating for 14,000 spectators and standing room for 4,500 spectators.
Media:
Three enclosed television/radio commentary positions. Enclosed in-ground studio with seating for up to four presenters. Dedicated press working area for up to 15 journalists working with telephone lines, tables and GPOs. 20 press and observer seats within close proximity to the press working area. Press conference facilities for up to 20 seated journalists

is this the grounds that the Western Force in the Super 14 (RU) and the roundballers in the A-League are looking to expand, totally renovate? What is the news on this. Several years ago it sounded like a "done deal", but I haven't heard a peep on this subject in quite some time.

Perth really does need a rectangular specific top flight statium. I would think that if Perth could work their way back into the NRL, that having a top flight club in all 3 rectangular sports, with soccer being on the opposite season of the two rugby codes, would be enough to have the government and business community see the logic in building a great facility since it would be used so much.

How many other venues do you see being built that really see limited use, making it hard to justify the great expence to the taxpayers!

There has been a number of plans for a new stadium for the rectangular games over the last few years but none have come to fruition. First of all we were supposed to get a 20,000 stadium right in the heart of the CBD as part of the convention centre deal, this got canned and a new entertainment centre is being built on that site, then we were told MES would get a massive rebuild to 28,000 but again that was squashed. Now they are saying the new stadium 60,000 to be built for 2014 will have retractable stands and will be suitable for all teams.

I don't see how 5 teams can play out of the same stadium without pitch condition issues and fixture clashes. The Force ran an interesting survey asking why people were not renewing memberships and if people would stop attending if they kept playing out of a AFL stadium. It showed overwhelmingly that people were sick of Subiaco and weren't going to renew memberships.

I still think redevelopment of MES is a possibility but doubt the State Govt will stump up for it as they are spending $1billion on the AFL stadium. It needs the Force, Glory and NRL to be campaigning for a rebuilt MES but I see little effort as the Glory are a rudderless ship at the moment, the NRL don't seem to give two hoots about Perth and the Force don't seem to want to rock the boat.

thanks for the update.

I would think that a "retractable" stand 60k venue would be great for the AFL franchises, marquee test matches (RU and other rectangular test matches), as well as the odd playoff or large rectangular match...

But I would think that with the combinded demand and pull of 3 rectangular pitch codes Between the RU=Force (and all the lower grade comps below them), RL=Reds (hopefully back in the NRL soon, and all their lower grades) and Soccer=Glory, which uses the venue in the off summer season... that some logic would have to be used to say that such a dedicated rectangular venue would be needed and justified.

I would think the 25k range would be ideal for all 3 codes.

Logic and government though don't always mix...
