A niggling back injury to Jerome Ropati, who had started to shrug off the utility tag by establishing himself in the five-eighth role last season, means Witt has been handed the No 6 jersey.
Witt, who impressed in the trial against the Bulldogs, was grateful for getting the first shot at what is his preferred spot.
"That's the reason I came to the Warriors," he said.
"I've got the first crack at the position so the ball's in my court and if I keep playing well I'll continue to be picked there."
Witt said his partnership with halfback Grant Rovelli was one of the areas of his game he was looking to fine-tune.
"Me and Grant hang out a lot off the field, so that makes things a lot easier," he said.
"We talk a lot about the game and I think our combination has been good so far."
