Now I know I was not that sober when I watched the Melbourne Cup, but was that one of the slowest Cup's ever! I watched it again and it was still incredibly slow. Makes you wonder if Efficient ran she really could have won! Or was that just my impression!

Nah, 'he' would not have won.

His time he won the Derby in was 2.5 seconds slower than what Maybe Better won the SAAB in. That equates to about 15 lengths when you work on 6 lengths per second.

Efficient would have dropped 6.5kgs from his Derby run. Maybe Better Dropped 7kgs from his SAAB win and ran 3rd beaten 4 and a bit lengths.

Efficient would have to improved massively on his Derby run to even get close to beating Maybe Better let alone the 2 Japanse horses.

Once again the press and punters got carried away with an emerging 3 year old. Our stayers are that poor right now we'll latch onto one. Look at Headturner last year, won the Derby and he was the next big thing. Done didly since.

I'm very happy they didn't run Efficient. Let him mature now and see how he comes back in the Autumn. He certainly can be another star of the turf, but running in the Cup this year wouldn't have done him any good imo.

Just to add to that, I don't think there was much in the Derby again this year that he beat. The place getters haven't done a whole lot.

It was a big win in the Derby by Efficient. BUT he was aided by a rail runs on the 'fast' lane that day.

Tuesday Joy who won that same day beat a filly like Rendzina by 14 lengths by coming along the fence and Rendzina came down the middle where they couldn't make ground. Tuesday Joy only finished a couple of lengths ahead of Rendzina in the Oaks yesterday on a track with no bias. That's 12 lengths difference.

The track that day aided what looked like a massive win by Efficient.

Note, I'm not potting him, he looks like a very good horse. But I'm certainly not going to get carried away with him until I see more. Haradasan (sp) wasn't about either...

Personally I take more notice of sectionals in staying races than overall times.
They ran 3.21.42 for the Cup.
Compare Efficients last 600m with Maybe Betters on the Saturday(35.22 to 35.97)
Efficient looked like it had a fair bit up its sleeve too.
Sure the overall time being slower may help Efficients last 600m time but my view is if they ran quicker up front in the Derby he wins even easier.
Also Maybe Better ran 35.92 for its last 600m in the Melbourne Cup.It loomed up to win but the Japanese horses just surged away from it.
Dont fall into the trap of saying Maybe Better cant stay.(it did run home quicker than its Saab win).It should of because it dropped 7 kgs.
What time would Efficient do with 6 kgs or so less?
I have no doubt Efficient with a clear run finishes in front of Maybe Better.(if Efficient can stay 3200m).Thats the question we will never know.
I think he has lengths on its stablemate Zipping and he wasnt far away in 4th.
Dont write the Derby field off either.
There are a few horses in that field that can run.(wont be over 2 miles ).
Efficient I suppose would be aimed at the AJC Derby in the autumn but will it run in the Tancred(or whatever they call it now)?
That looks a good race for Maybe Better(along with the Australian Cup).
Will Efficient come back and can it run the Sydney way of going?

Foz, the Derby field was week, again. Our staying ranks are p*ss poor because everyone is trying to breed the next sprinting star where all the cash is as a 2 year old.

And you still have to take into account the fast lane Efficient came down. There's been a few that raced that day and since been seen again and it was like a complete form reversal. It definately aided his win in a weak field.

He's good, but not as good as the media etc would like to have us think. Not yet anyway. He needs to mature yet. They said before the Derby he was still a bit immature, yet they wanted to back him up for his 3rd run in 10 days in a Melbourne Cup...

I'll wait to see him in the autumn first. Headturner was getting all the hype Efficient was and has since done nothing.

There is a couple of handy 3 year olds that are in the paddock maturing and they would have been close in the that Derby field. Mearas and Haradasun.

How good is the autumn classic races shaping if Efficient, Mearas and Haradasun clash? Maybe throw in Miss Finland.

Looks the best 3yo crop since Occy, Filante, saintly, etc

Throw in Nothin' Leica Dane from yesteryear........
These horses may all be better horses but one of the things about the previous horses is that in all races they were in, they were always competitive until the post. Very rarely one of the horses smashed his rivals.
I can see a few of these horses racing against each other in the autumn and on more than one occassion one wil smash it's rivals.
