Waugh Chopped......

Waugh sacked
Steve Waugh has been axed as the captain of the Australian one-day team.
Waugh who led Australia to World Cup victory in 1999 has been under increasing pressure throughout the summer with Australia failing to make the finals of the international one-day competition for only the third time in 23 years.
Waugh has called a press conference for 2.30pm AEDT with Australian Cricket Board Chief Executive officer James Sutherland.
A replacement for Waugh is yet to be named and although Adam Gilchrist is expected to take the reins, Ricky Ponting could be a shock selection.
Waugh earlier this month admitted his axing was possible.
Everyone is under scrutiny, he said. You've got to perform, I don't expect any favours.
If I'm not doing the job and someone is doing better, then they will get the opportunity.
Australia has had the same one-day and Test captain since 1999 when Waugh took over as Test skipper from Mark Taylor.
He had taken Taylor's place as one-day skipper two years previously in a move designed to reinvigorate the team prior to the World Cup.
Waugh now seems to be travelling the same path as his predecessor.
Waugh is Australia's most experienced one-day player but the selectors have shown there is no room for sentiment in their approach to successfully defending the World Cup next year.
There is no news yet on who will replace Waugh as captain of the one-day side

Initial thoughts??

Hmmm...as memorable and brillant as he has been in the one day side since 1985, i did think his form had been slipping. Not just in a batting sense, he had been making some really weird captaining decisions and making several 'uncaptain' like statements in press conferences. The sight of him bowling Lehmann and Bevan in the last game when we needed to restrict the Africans was probably what did it for the selectors...

I think S.Waugh should've been given the opportunity to stand down. Being sacked is a bit harsh, and many people will probably be ticked off about it...But still, maybe it was the time to pass the torch

Moffo.

Best to do these things now to prepare for the WC in 2003.Now they gotta dump his bro too as he's getting old and useless plus he's a Canterbury fan

I don't think it'll be too long now until baby brother Mark follows.
As much as I dislike him, I'm saying Ponting will be the next captain.
But it does sadden me to hear that Steve's been axed. Turn the page I guess.

The real weak link in the one day series was S Warne but he seems to be immune from criticism.Probably a good time to let SWaugh step aside-still plenty of time to bring him back if things don,t work out.We did after all win 4 of our last 5 games under his leadership.

Australia one-day captain Steve Waugh has been dumped from the side, the Australian Cricket Board (ACB) said on Wednesday.
The 36-year-old will not be picked in the squad for the seven one-day matches in South Africa starting next month, ACB chief executive James Sutherland said.
Waugh said: "I'm not in the side right now but I've got to try and turn that around and be selected for the 2003 World Cup (in South Africa)."
Waugh, who led Australia to victory in the 1999 World Cup final, has recently faced a backlash from local media over his side's failure to qualify for the finals of the triangular limited overs series against New Zealand and South Africa in Australia.

I think steve should have been given the chance to stand down, BUT - maybe he did.

I cant see S. Waugh walking without questioning the umpire's decision.

Waugh has been reported as saying that this is a 'setback and a challenge'.
That sounds like he expects to fight his way back into the limited overs team.

Maybe a few years ago I would have backed him to do as much but I think thats it for Steve now...he'll finish his international career as Test captain just as Mark Taylor did before him.

The selectors were unanimous is their decision...in theory at least that means he doesnt have even one member of the sleection panel on his side.

The good thing is that the selectors got this out of the way before the team departs for SAF tomorrow.

I'd gues that Steve Waugh would've been told that he had to perform and if he didn't he'd go.That would go for ALL players not just S.Waugh.I doubt he will be the only one to go from the way Hohns sounded and a few more heads may roll and in the end it will be for the better as the 2003 WC is the most important thing on the agenda and they can't afford to leave things to the last minute.

Someone has to take the old guy aside and tell him that it's time to buy a rocking chair and start talking about how things were in his day.
36 is a good age to retire.

The problem with Steve is that he is such a great fighter he doesn't know when to stop.

Waugh has been made a SCAPEGOAT.

If you look at the stats, Steve Waugh performed better or as good as any batsman. The only exception was Michael Bevan.

M.WAUGH: 7 innings, 126 runs,Avg - 21.00, SR - 70.78
GILCHRIST: 6 innings, 97 runs, Avg - 16.16, Highest Score of 31, SR - 97
PONTING: 8 innings, 254 runs, Avg - 31.75, SR - 77.43
MARTYN ( disincluding his 104 not out ): 7 innings, 122 runs, Avg 17.4, SR - 63.12
S.WAUGH: 7 innings, 187 runs, Avg 31.16, SR - 69.00

Where's the justification in Waugh's sacking based on those figures?

In the past year, Waugh averaged 40 in one day cricket. His team won 4 out of the last 5 internationals this summer. The above stats indicate Waugh was singled out and made a scapegoat.

It was a panic decision influenced by the media. It is difficult to see how form can be blamed when you compare his stats to those of Martyn (who has returned to his 1993 form), M.Waugh and Gilchrist in particular. He was level with Ponting.

Why?

Why is it that it's OK to praise Waugh for the '99 WC victory but then when the team loses it supposedly has nothing to do with him?

Of course he is a factor when the team loses but so are the other 10 players.

All I'm saying is that there is no real reason why he should have been dropped given the stats. As a player, captain and mentor he has as much to offer as anyone.

I think it's better to do this now as it might be a big risk leaving him and maybe a few others in there and then them failing and leaving only 6 months to prepare a new squad for the WC.
When Heals and Tubby were dropped there was a big outcry and I think this is just the same thing all over again.

I reckon Waughs dumping had little to do with his own form, rather the attitude he was developing towards the one day matches recently played.
Waugh believed that the one day games in Australia were merely games to experiment with his rotation system, and results were not too important. While I kind of agree with him to some extent, the ACB and the selectors do not share a similar view. Mark Taylor was sprouting similar comments just before he got the chop too.
I have gained the impression that Waugh was probably the one that devised the rotational policy for the team. It had been in place for a while for bowlers (which I support), but had only recently been introduced for the batters too, and after reading one of his books I got for Christmas I reckon this was Waughs idea .
He has compared ita few occaisions to what Man U do in England. This in my opinion was a very bad analogy. The closest a cricket team can make a comparision with is baseball. In that sport, the pitchers are frequently rotated, occaisionally the catchers gets a rest, but the remainingbatters are usually in while ever they are fit.
So what I am saying is that his form as a batsman was still OK, but there are plenty of players in this country who could provide similar figures given the chance. Mark Taylors form was still pretty good when was dropped, it was his attitude to the oneday game that was in decline and it is exactly the same for Steve Waugh now.
I'm not sure if it is the right decision, but I though the same when Mark Taylor and Ian Healey were let go, and the general public were saying the same things. Looking back now, it appears they got them right.
