World challenge back home
By Steve Mascord
September 14, 2006 12:00

RUGBY league's World Club Challenge is set to be played in Australia for the first time in 12 years, with all six teams still in the NRL race seeing the benefits of a "home" decider.
But St George Illawarra also want to explore the possibility of an extended tournament, played in a neutral venue such as Dubai.
"I'd like to see the event in Sydney, having experienced what it does for the UK game," said Manly chief executive Grant Meyer, who started the season with the Catalans.
"I think Sydney should certainly be putting its hand up for it."
The world title bout, played in Britain since 2000, is set down for February 4. The last one in Australia was in 1994, when Wigan shocked Brisbane 20-14 in front of 54,220 fans at ANZ Stadium.
A Bulldogs spokesman said the WCC was a disruption last season and it was likely they would "want to do it here" in 2006.
"The trainers and (coach) Steve Folkes say it set back your preparation by two weeks," he said.
All accommodation and travel expenses are covered by the NRL and Rugby Football League but profits are pocketed by those organisations.
That has encouraged promoters to take advantage of the superior exchange rate in the northern hemisphere but Newcastle's CEO Ken Conway said: "It might be slightly different for us because we run the stadium as well.
"We'd get an earn out of it from the stadium."
The Dragons have raised the possibility of a four-way tournament – and of Dubai as venue – in the past.
"We discussed (Dubai) with St Helens years ago," said chief executive Peter Doust.
"What I suggested to the NRL was that the World Club Challenge should be extended to the top two teams from each competition."
NRL chief operating officer Graham Annesley said playing on neutral ground "won't be for this coming year because the sports facilities in Dubai are still being constructed".

Bulldogs vs St Helens at Telstra :D

LMAO @ Saints suggesting it should be extended to include the top two teams from each country - must be because he knows they'll only ever be second ;-)

I'd love for it to be played in OZ. I'd head out to the game regardless of who was playing.

Doust's idea has merit, but why Dubai? The top 4 sounds good to me. But I'm sure this will upset the 'season is too long already' brigade, and fair enough.

They used to play a lot more games in the past IIRC. Midweek competitions, more tests, etc etc back in the day.

Dubai? What an idiotic idea. having spent time there last year I can think of nothing worse than playing in an environment where the temperature constantly exceeds 50 degrees.

Also, can you imagine footballers in a region governed by devout Muslims?

i think the 4 team idea is no good... what if one of the losers of the GF's wins this new tornament. Kinda Takes away from the grand final i reckon. the team who wins the GF should be known as the best inn their country and by taking the runner up option out of the WCC you pretty much ensure that theres no argument.

Dubai for corporate sponsor relationship building I would suggest. Same reason the Rugger 7's is held there.

I think Dousty is a canny bastard suggesting Dubai... I'd be happy to get some of those Oil Sheiks supporting my team.

You guys are dreamers. Dubai supports the Rugby sevens with big bucks.

Why not try Hong Kong. That was supposed to be a potential venue for an NRL game?

On the other hand, maybe St Marys is a safer bet.:)

In all seriousness this is actually the type of novelty game that would be good for promoting the game in Melbourne.

Though if its in Syd like most regardless of who's in I'll be so footy starved I'll definately be there.

Yes, they dabbled with the minor code the see what the fuss is about, now they look prepared to take the step up and get involved with proper rugby.

Or a multitude of places.

I can see the merit in HK, after all, remember when the anti-syphoning laws were first introduced in Australia, and the HK7's were considered a marquee event and placed on that list?

Well a fast moving, freemarket focused government comes, and out goes RU.

All smart sminds would make the same decision.

Yes... under our current procedures, we'd probably take the top 4 or 5 players, and progress them to PL or above.

With extra money, we'll get hold of ten, the lesser 5 players will become automatic starters for the wallabies at 14 with their skills.

Good old rugby union.. no matter how mediocre one gets, there's always RU to provide world's best practice.

Woods, again you are a little behind the times. St Helens have already participated in the Dubai 7’s as part of their pre season preparation:

The international invitation competition saw English rugby league team St Helens become just the second rugby league side to compete in Dubai following the appearance by the London Broncos last year. Switching rugby codes didn’t seem to phase the Lancashire side who made it through to the final before going down 33-19 to the Kentz Drifters – a team of Pacific Islanders including sevens legend Waisale Serevi of Fiji, who still holds the record as all-time leading points scorer in the IRB Sevens Series.

how about the minor premiers and the major premiers being the 2 teams going thru (and if they are the same one, then the GF opponents get through)
