We are our own worst enemy

Rugby League and it's administrators are surely their own worst enemy, The reason I say this is beacuse there is no way the rival code will ever challenge league as a great sporting spectalce. Over the weekend the Wallabies played the Springboks in South Africa and another uninspiring game was the foregone conclusion. Of the 35 points scored in the match only 5 came from a try. The remainder were penalty goals and goals and the majority were kicked from within each teams own half. Does'nt say much about the merits of the other code or their ability to play an expansive type of game. If League can stop shooting itself in the foot and move forward with positive actions we can build the game to a level whereby every unionhack will be knocking down our door to get a run.

When i was watching the news i to was amazed how a match can feature 35 points with only one try.

The difference between Rugby League and other sports is that instead of only other sports putting the boot in, we have enemies within the sport. There are so many people who have made a living from the sport and claim to love it undermining it. This really escalated with the Super League war and lots of people are still bitter.

Legend, I personally thought that the Wallabies Vs Boks game was great to watch. Sure there was only one try scored, but both defences were pretty hard to penetrate. That game had more intensity and excitement than the Kangaroos Vs Kiwi match. In Rugby penalty goals are more valuable than those in League. Plus thats just a facet of Rugby and I don't have any problem with it.

Yes you are right, League is its own worst enemy. Plus News Ltd controls too much of your game. The NRL are puppets to News Ltd. If and when News Ltd pulls out of the NRL, will spell the disaster or League - that it a worry. I always thought League was a game for the fans, but all indications speak otherwise.

Legend....I agree with you but as fans, what can we do about it? There is unfortunately too much baggage left over from super league but can the administrators come up with a quick fix solution? Union is a more international game than ours and it uses its internation standing to try and beat us off. Lets face it, if Australia played South Africa in South Africa in Rugby League, no one would watch it. The powers that be must try and develop the game outside of Australia but before that, they need to fix things up. But what is the solution? And what can we do about it?

Marcus, in two tri-nations matches so far there has only been one try scored. You must be a purist if that's what excites you about the so-called running game.

Legend, the All Blacks Vs Boks game was the worst I have ever seen - it was crap. The wet weather didn't help though.

I agree that League is it,s own worst enemy. I have tried to make this point but get no support. No one seems to make constructive suggestion. League was dominant,at least in NSW & Qld. Overseas is pitiful. We can't fix there until we fix here. I don't trust media barons. They will go with dollar not game.We have to get back to the grassroots. If that looks like we are shrinking then so be it.The people who play and follow the game will at last know that they are being listened to. We then will have our support base loyal and willing to tough it through.I am losing patience and so are many. If not heard soon we will be gone.

What do we need? A national competion without teams being created, dissolved, merged, relocated every year or so. The NRL seems directionless, maybe due to the news ltd investment stifling what is actually good for the game not themselves.
Channel 9- what is their problem? Rugby league gets crap exposure outside of NSW and QLD. Therefore wankers speak of no interest in the other states , of course there's no interest if they don't know it exists. I'm keen to see their promotion of afl in NSW and QLD. Foxtel- show all the crap union internationals ( you know italy, argentina, canada, usa etc) but the french RL team tours NZ and PNG - nothing. Basically I'm saying even the league friendly media treats us like crap.
Development of a short and long term calender for international rugby league. No haphazard placement between club games. Good promotion, even the australia vs NZ games get poor promotion. The RLIF needs to get off their arses (apart from people like Tas Bateiri).
In short , the NRL needs stability, somehow we need more promotion through the media ( not the gossip/ rumour stuff but televising ,FTA,the NRLnationally and internationals whether australia plays or not), and the international game must be a priority,
cheers, Global13.
