We can host Tri Nations: Webcke
05:59 AEST Wed Nov 10 2004

Straight-shooting Kangaroos prop Shane Webcke can see no reason why the Tri Nations wouldn't be a success in Australia - provided rugby league officials think outside the square and market the tournament properly.

Webcke declared his confidence in Australia's ability to host the tournament as English officials branded this year's Tri Nations a raging success and announced Saturday night's Great Britain-Australia game at Wigan's JJB Stadium was a sell-out.

Rugby Football League boss Richard Lewis also offered to hand the tournament over to Australia next season - an offer that has previously been declined by the Australian Rugby League, who fear they could take a hit in the hip pocket if it was played in the southern hemisphere.

That attitude riles Webcke, who believes international rugby league has a place in Australia provided it is marketed correctly.

"I think that's the key - it has to be properly promoted," Webcke said.

"I can't see any reason why it shouldn't be (a success). Take it to the places where we will get crowds. If the Sydneysiders don't want to watch it let's take it somewhere where people will.

"There's plenty of venues around that you'll pack out.

"These are great games of footy. I know a lot of people back home watch it. Why wouldn't they come out if the spectacle is at home?"

It's hard to believe the Kangaroos would fail to draw decent crowds in areas such as Newcastle and Townsville - centres that live and breath rugby league

Brisbane has also been an international wasteland in recent seasons - it's been five years since a Test was played at Suncorp Stadium - while Perth and Adelaide have been starved of rugby league since the end of the Super League war.

"You're taking the best of the best to these people and I think you'll find Australian people in general will go and watch a good sporting spectacle," Webcke said.

"If you take it to those other centres like Adelaide and Perth...I think you'd soon sell it.

"You have to think outside the square a little bit...it may not be as simple as put the poster up people will roll up. They may have to roll their sleeves up a bit more and properly promote it, like our cousins in rugby union do.

"Even the games of absolutely no consequence they just promote them right.

"It's about promotion and making people feel a sense of event. If we do that people will go and watch it, it doesn't matter if they're league fans or not.

i totally agree with webcke

if it was to be hosted in australia alone

id have no games in sydney except the final ( which should lead to a huge crowd for the final)

play games everywhere else

perth, adelaide, brisbane, townsville, GC, CC/NEWCASTLE, Melbourne

Good old Webke. He's the only player that speaks out for the good of the international game.

It's definately feasible, no doubt about it. Play 1 Aus vs NZ game in Australia, one in NZ. Both Aus vs. GB games in Australia, both NZ vs. GB games in NZ.

1. Aus VS GB (Subiaco oval)
2. Aus VS NZ (Hindmarsh stadium)
3. Aus vs NZ (Lang Park)
4. Final at Stadium Australia.

It would work, no doubt about it.

Yeah, that's probably the best concept, but it'd have to be arragned so that England get time to work off Jet-Lag due to them having the most travel to do.

Make them stop off in PNG and play a test...that will get rid of the Jet Lag and make sure they are match fit

I'd like to see them play a few games in India, & see what the response is. We could say it's a cricket match so plenty of people come ;-)

The ARL have rocks in their head if they don't give Townsville a Test match! I reckon they should host it here and I agree with Webbie it needs to be marketed properly! Play a Test at Members Equity stadium in Perth...so many ex-pat NZers and Brits in that part of the world...I'm sure they'd get at least 18K-25K people! Sadly, I don't think the final should be played @ Telstra Stadium....it wouldn't get a decent crowd I think. I'd like to see Australia play Great Britain in melbourne again. If olympic park has 24K seats they should be able to fill it ! Let the AFL supporters know the difference between the 2 games! I would propose it like this

Game 1: Australia vs NZ- Dairy Farmers Stadium, Townsville
Game 2: Australia vs NZ- EnergyAustraliaStadium, Newcastle
Game 3: NZ vs Great Britain- Members Equity Stadium, Perth
Game 4: Australia vs Great Britain: Olympic Park, Melbourne
Game 5: NZ vs Great Britain: Westpac Trust Stadium, Wellington
Game 6: Australia vs Great Britain: Aussie Stadium, Sydney

FINAL: Suncorp Stqadium, Brisbane

Give Brisbane the final. Lang Park is now a state of the art facility. Aussie is an eyesore. You'd cover just about every part of Oz where RL has a presence...Perth might even get a good crowd if the games there next season are a success!

The problem's simple: Love and Carr.

Those two fools have done NOTHING for int'l RL. Someone else said it on totalrl.com:

- only since Richard Lewis took office has there been a unified aim to get a solid int'l calendar in place. Nothing ventured at all by the ARL

- they're democratically defeated in an RLIF vote (Glenn Black rumpus) and what do they do? They threaten to withdraw and launder all their dirty washing in public.

- constantly tell everyone int'l footy is a non-starter in Australia in October when most Aussies - and most evidence - proves otherwise.

- fail to organise one single int'l event.

Since Lewis has come into power we have a functioning RLEF, we have the Med Cup, we have the ENC, we have more comps and nations playing the game. How has the ARL under Love and Carr assisted SH development outside of a dev. off. in PNG?

These two scumbags are scared of their inability to run a professional show, they'd much rather go on a junket every year, be given a cheque for the ARL and get away from thier wives for a month.

Be honest, with attitudes of people like Carr and Love in charge WE WILL NEVER HAVE A GENUINE INTERNATIONAL CALENDAR.

I think Webke is spot on the mark. There is no reason why games in places such as Gosford, Townsville and Newcastle wont sell out. Have GB play warm matches in the Gold Coast. Have the final played at Lang Park. It is a RL grounf yet the only international footy it's seen is the Wannabies bore them to sleep.

He is right when he says think outside the square. Right now The Footy Show, 2GB, The Daily Telegraph and Channel 9 are the main media outlets the ARL uses to promote league. Take a page out of Union's book. You want to appeal to the non-league fans too, after all the Kangaroos are representing all of Australia not just Australian league fans.

From today's news:
NZRL chairman Selwyn Pearson also chimed into the issue today, saying his body was keen to co-host the event with the Australian Rugby League provided the finances were in place.

"If the numbers were to stack up and there was a break-even bottom line, the NZRL would love to co-host the tri-series," Pearson said.

"Why wouldn't you look at it.

"The other thing is the southern hemisphere teams should travel one year, the northern hemisphere the next. Should the bottom line break-even at worst, we'd do it for our fans of rugby league.

"The NZRL would love to do it."

If they have half the games and the games in oz were in safe RL territory.. i don't think there will be a problem.

Why give adelaide or perth a game? International RL is so rare in Oz the RL heartlands need to be rewarded first.

What does he mean by that???? I would have thought that an Aus vs GB game would (Should) sell out in sydney. Are there lots of people in Sydney that dont follow League???

NZRL Chairman Sel Pearsons was on the news this morning saying that OZ and NZ would be sharing the next tri nations but another news commentator said that there wouldnt be any opportunity for any country other than GB to hold it until at least 2006
