Wasn't the whole issue for not having live footy on channel 9 because people would stop going to the games?

This week canterbury got 23k against melbourne.. which is a pretty good effort. Last year in delayed footy we played melbourne at aussie in round 2 and only got 19k..

Then townsville packed out.. (dunno there actually figure but it's up over 24k isn't it?)

LIVE FOOTBALL HERE TO STAY?? IT HASNT EFFECTED THE CROWDS >> WE GOT ABSOLUTELY AMAZING TV RATINGS

these guys are dead set clowns if they don't keep the footy LIVE. It's obvious we all want it.

The fact that it is the finals would have a huge effect on the numbers.

If the nrl were concerned about crowds why does fox get live games? I live near shark park but can watch the game live. Just about all sharks games were live this season on fox mainly cause they were not as attractive as the roosters who are friday night and sunday arvo specialists.

The whole issue is that Channel Nine prefers the delayed games. It gives them a chance to have proper ad breaks instead of trying to cram them in during goal attempts.

It's fair enough that they want to make profit out of the product and I don't really mind waiting an extra hour for delayed coverage, I can barely tell the difference. I know I wouldn't be more inclined to watch the game if I knew it was live.

You can put on four to five adds in a row when its delayed. That means you have extra time to get another tinnie or have a squirt.

Its safer for nine to have it delayed as well......bloopers can be edited easily.
And pre an post match previews and reviews can be reheasred or done over if not right the first time.

I agree. I dont mind delayed games during the year, and its more money for 9 which in turn is more money for league. Its only an hour during the year so big deal.

More money for nine is not more money for league. Nine is paying league a paltry amount for its TV ratings compared to the AFL.

And it's not 1 hour during the year - its 52 hours a year.

The next TV negotiations are coming up in a year or so. If you really dont think bigger ratings will result in a better deal then I dont know what to say.

Im obviously talking about 1 hour a game.

They show far too many ads on delayed games, it drives me insane.

Thats my number one problem, its so annoying when your team finally gets a channel 9 game and its interrrupted every 10 mins by ads.

For what Channel 9 paid for the rights i actually think the're coverage before the finals was just as paltry as the sum they paid. I think the ONLY reason theyve moved to show the finals all live is to sweeten the NRL up just in time for when the rights come up again.

As mentioned above, its got nothing to do with crowds - its 100% about being able to put in as many ads as possible which, lets face it, nine has to do as it is a profit organisation, not a charity

Agree Paullyboy, sometimes its forgotten that 9 is there to make a profit as thats what they do.

The ratings for normal premiership games are down.

Nine, presuming that they will get the rights again, will obviously pay more this time as last time league was torn apart by the super league war.

Whats your source for the ratings??

But i was more refering to if they can do a delayed game with more commercials they will pay more as they will recieve far more than if it is live and they can only sell half the commercials.

I agree we got screwed in the SL war for TV rights. This time hopefully they will cough up big and if it means more money for league to put back into the by showing the games with ads then i am more than happy with it.

Hell maybe the NRL will even promote a match with the new money!!!

They stick on one 25 second ad every chance there is anyway (a try, a scrum)

Then halftime goes for about 20 mins so they put on 15 minute of ads through that anyway.

Channel 10 AND Channel 9 seem to be able to survive by giving the AFL National Live games on a weekly basis.

But when it comes to our great game you imbeciles talk it down OH NOO THEY NEED 10 minutes of commercials every 2 seconds to survive!

I agree I would much prefer the games to be live. However, during the season, Channel 9 won't permit it. They won't shift Burke from the 7.30pm slot on Fridays and Channel 9 want to put an AFL game on on Sunday afternoons followed by the NRL game at 4.

I have to say I MUCH prefer what they are doing on a Sunday afternoon than the usual in the season. You can sit and watch football from 2 pm (even if it does involve the idiot Voss and Gould for half an hour to start). Having the Footy Show on as a pregame show really builds up atmosphere and tension for the main telecast.

I would love to see this happen during the season proper..... but it won't.

I also think when it comes up for contract negotiation, the rugby league interests on the NRL should insist on 3 FTA games. One Friday night, one Saturday night and one Sunday afternoon. Fox won't like it, but it should happen in the interests of the GAME.

greeneyed I agree with you that having the footyshow before does build up a great atmosphere but do you think for 26 rounds it would still be the same or that it is special due to the big finals games?
