Zappia questioned over dying fan's cash
The former chief executive of the Cronulla Sharks rugby league team has been asked to explain where money sent to him by a dying fan for a trust fund has gone.
The fan allegedly sent six cheques totalling around $30,000 to Tony Zappia to establish a trust called the Beyond Sharks Foundation.
It has been reported the 27-year-old man, who wants to remain anonymous, has about 12 months to live and wanted part of an insurance payment to go to his beloved rugby league team.
He has told the Seven Network that Mr Zappia told him to send the cheques to his home address and the fan says he does not know where the money has gone.
"Tony Zappia answered back almost immediately and said that it would be a good idea to set up a foundation," the fan said.
"Tony Zappia, he emailed me and told me to send it to his home from then on in."
The Seven Network reports that a club spokesman said the Sharks had no knowledge of the foundation and had not received any of the money.
The fan said Mr Zappia sent him 73 emails from his personal account, saying it was to ensure confidentiality as his personal assistant had access to his official Sharks account.
Mr Zappia did not comment on the report but told News Limited the $30,000 has been spent on team camps and football equipment.
The fan has pledged $1.5 million in total, which Mr Zappia said will be used for ground improvements and facilities for fans.
Mr Zappia has told Fairfax newspapers that he will hand over the details of the fan's offer to the club's chairman next week.
