We Need An Established Halfback

For 3 seasons now we have not had an established halfback. An experienced player with a good kicking game that can play smart football. People are calling for Props and forwards, however I think generally our pack holds its own.It is decision making under pressure and ability to grind out games which has murdered every one of the last 3 seasons. When all our forwards are fit they hold their own against most teams in the NRL. On the back of a unreliable kicking game and high risk, turnover football I reckon they are made to look a lot worse. Same for our defense, it is constantly put under pressure by errors and poor kicks.

Farah and Marshall are both brilliant players. And with support cast like Ellis, Galloway, Lawrence, Tuiaki, Heightington it is a side with plenty of talent. So why do we come up short every season? You saw it tonight. Having to go to our hooker and our free wheeling genius when it gets to the nitty gritty. They are both flashy fantastic players but neither were born as an organising halfback, the most important position on the field! With a wise old had like Kimmorley and i reckon we are automatic top 4. Guys like Cronk, Prince and co made a huge difference to those teams, our packs are no worse then Melbourne and Gold Coast yet they are well entrenched in the finals and we are no where again.,

Is there anyone out there. Because im not prepared to sit here for another season hoping Lui or Moltzen can fill the void. I want a halfback who has won games for his side in first grade. We need to lessen the load on our number 6 and 9 and try and bring in a leader. We have cut alot of dead wood and surely a play for a player like Michael Monoghan would be worth it. Is there anyone else available? What about Michael Witt, a 90% goalkicker with a decent kicking game. Somebody? Tim Smith, worth a punt i say, has proved he can win games in first grade. I reckon with a organsing half our forwardsare not a big issues, case in front 2005, where we had average players like Oneill, Fulton, Haltau and Gibbs and it didn't matter.

3 seasons without a halfback. The days of Johhhny or a stop gap measure must surely end.I wonder what the great Sheens has in his mind for next season.

A lot of truth in what u are saying Eddie, but i honestly think Moltzen can be a good halfback and if he was in that position ALL YEAR he would be halfway to being an established number 7. As for Lui NO THANKS , i hope he isnt in our plans for 2010. Lui isnt woeful but he aint much friggin good either, he looks very slow and lazy to me and to be honest id rather even Morris than him.

Disagree.
Moltzen and Lui are both good options for halfback. Lui showed lasted night he has bucketloads of potential with a good passing game, deceptively quick with ability to bust a tackle. Whereas Moltzen has a great combination with Benji and has genuine speed to burn. Defensively they both need to step it up a little and demonstrate their kicking game and 5th tackle options more.

The halves attack isn't the issue, it is patchy defense at times and goal kicking.

Are you for real LUI slow and lazy.... He is def in our plan for 2010 and beyond. He is great in defence and has alot of time before the line..

But I'm all for signing another prop or 2...why do we have so many 2nd rowers...

If we have to sign an established 7 Michael Mongahan would be the perfect fit for the tigers- Great d- and good kicking game and let benji and robbie create-

He just won the challenge cup overnight so hopefully he is a little homesick and may look to come home after that victory....

I just look at hoew many times we have lost games by 1-6 points over the last 4 seasons. How many sides we have failed to get a field goal when needed. How many times we have lost in golden point. How many times our kicking game has let us down in these close games.

To me it points to an established halfback over a prop forward. Doesn't mean I don't think we need a prop. But who is going to turn all those 2 point losses into 2 point wins?

We have better forwards in 2009 then we did in 2005. We now have Galloway and Ellis, over the likes of Oneill, Halatau, Ben Galea and Fulton. The difference was in 2005 we had Scott Prince, an organising half, and decent forwards are more then enough then.

Before I saw Moltzen and Marshall combine, I would have agreed with you Eddie. I reckon they deserve a full season together without being changed around. If it doesnt come off, then I'm with you.

I think Moltzen is a great player in the making, but I would not complain one iota if we signed an experienced, organising halfback. Moltzen can also play fullback and centres, so he'll be in the side somewhere.

Personally, we should have bought Kimmorley last season. He would have been PERFECT complimenting Marshall.

I still think we need one extra prop too.

Monaghan would be a great signing, but I think Raiders are pretty set on getting him back from England. He's from that area anyway, and his brother is at the club, so you'd have to think he'd lean more toward the Raiders than anyone else if he did come back to Aus. But a great signing fi you could get him.

Witt is a great goalkicker and has a decent kicking game, but he is NOT an 'organising' half. The bloke barely says a word on the field - all good halfbacks never shut up. This was one of the reasons his career never took off, and anyway, I think he's signed with a local NZ rugby union team.

Tim Smith would go alright, but could be more trouble than he's worth.

I agree that you number 7 jersey has been your downfall ever since Prince left, but part of the reason for this is that there are very very few quality halves on the market. Cronk is a manufactured half - he is a winger with a decent kicking game. His insticts and his passing game are terrible. But he fits in nicely with the Storm game plan: Cronk does all the kicking, Smith creates the overlaps and Slater and Inglis score the tries.

Moltzen could be our Cronk imo.

I agree with the organising half thing though, but at no time have the Tigers appeared interested in chasing one. We didn't even make Kimmorley an offer, we didn't chase Finch whatever you think of him etc

Tim Smith / Todd Carney / Arana Taumata - all these guys come with substantial risk, even to what they can do in terms of destabilising a club. The Bulldogs cut their deadwood and look what happened. We bought Taumata, right or wrong, that's probably enough of a gamble.

Have WT actually got him? I know Warren McDonnell has said so but he has been so wrong so often regarding WT recruitment. Can you please refer me to an offical WT press release or anything else from the club itself acknowledging Taumnata for next year?

When I was reading that, I was going to make a joke about Moltzen. Then I read the replies.

We've needed a decent half for a long time. I originally thought Morris would be a really good option in that he would defend where Prince couldn't and do the simple things right that Eddie has highlighted - allowing Benji and Farah to do their thing. It soon became obvious he wasn't up to it, and even worse, Sheens seemed to be trying to turn him into Prince.

We've had plenty of "decent" halves at the club in the past who would go great guns now after being shown up in the past while they were the only play maker in a sh*t house team.

Tim Smith has been very ordinary for Wigan. Monas only seems to be good at hooker. Taumata is first class, but again is more a 5/8.

Are you for real LUI slow and lazy....
Yep im for real, so far he has shown nothing to prove otherwise, in defence ive seen a lot of 1 handed jumper clutches , ive seen him in the clear twice and got one down very quickly and also have a look at last nights game around the 65th minute and u will lazyness for yourself. Thats just my oppinion , i thinks molzts and benji was working and getting better by the week, so if it aint f*cked dont try fix it....

I think it was Rugby League Week about 2 weeks ago ran an article saying Taumata was signed, and he was talking with Farah and Marshall about how to handle the pressure, going out etc.

Useful backup if he is signed (as long as Marshall remains at 5/8) but I still remain doubtful until something official comes out from WT. WT are possibly taking a huge risk. I trust if they do have him, they have plenty of behaviouiral sacking clauses.

We need a half that when we get a lead can keep the other team out of the game by a good kicking game. Much like prince did to us last night. Moltzen Lui can't do that!

He was probably farked . everyone was...it was a intense game... massive step up for him physically and mentally .

Did you watch him in the toyota cup he was outstanding always amongst the best 3 on the field..... Blake Aysford was our toyota cup player of the year and look what he has done...

Lui could be rookie of the year next year-

Sheens has told him to let benji and Farah run the show....

But if we do sign a 7 it would create some comp. for places...
