Bingo.

I'm no stats man and these are just random numbers but....

If 2 million people watch a 2 hour telecast with x amount of ads

or 1.5 million people watch a 2.5- 3hr telecast with y amount of ads,

which tv rights are worth more?????

Exactly.

We are talking about a game here where there is a flashing light at the games to tell the umpires that the ads have finished and they can start the game after a goal is scored.

AFL is custom made for ads. They can squeeze one in after every single goal or break. Even in a live game. You can't do this in a RL game without a delayed telecast...

This may be true and i'm sure there are other factors that allow AFL to get more money from their tv contract.

Having said that what i don't understand is how they got so much extra money AND got so many little perks with their contract. For example getting lives games shown in NSW and QLD, despite embarrassingly bad viewing figures. Both 10 and 7 must be throwing away money doing this. How did the AFL get them to agree to this sort of deal whilst still paying FAR more than what 9 pays for league?

?

That much more plus all the perks?

the NRL are only just dusting them self of from the whole super leauge ARL ordeal. the AFL has never been raped the way our game has. hence there strong following of AFL, we are only just getting consistant crowds back now. give it a bit more time maybe one more rights deal and NRL will be naming the price.

But driving the reputation of the game down actually makes it worth less from a TV advertising point of view so it still makes no sense. Yes they may get it cheaper but TV advertisors won't want to place ads in a tainted sport and less peopel will tune in to watch it. Doesn't figure.

"We also have to face up to the fact they are a national sport, while all our clubs are on the eastern seaboard or Auckland," Gallop said. "They are also bigger, with their biggest club crowd being 52,000 and ours 30,000. The Swans are bigger in Sydney than the Storm in Melbourne." - David Gallop trying to justify why he undersold the TV rights by such a big margin. He mentions crowd figures to justify the poor TELEVISION contract which has absolutely nothing to do with the value of the television rights. Getting as many viewers in NSW and QLD alone as the AFL nationally is actually a bonus that should drive up the value of the rights but he talks about it like it's a negative. The TV networks actually lose money showing AFL in NSW and QLD because it rates so poorly.

Expect the same again if it's left to Gallop to negotiate the deal. If the Players Association don't step in and oversee the negotiations after what Gallop has done in his reign then they almost deserve to be underpaid for their gullibility/ignorance/stupidity/lazyness.

Agree that that quote is oversimplifying things. At the same time, while not a defining factor, there is definitely an appeal for broadcaster in a product which looks to be in demand; which is why American sport league are appealing, there is an air of relevance or importance when every stadium is full. Seems a little shallow when its ultimately down to the sport, but we all know that a full stadium can provide a massive difference in the way you watch a match even on TV.

Well said, afl looks like a product in demand and the nrl, except in Q'ld. and sometimes in Melb. and NZ, doesn't.

Wait and see, bet you the afl will get very close to the figure they want.

Does this TV deal run out at the end of the 2011 or 2012 season?

Tricky decsion will be whether to negotiate early when economic down turn is on but at least it will give any new clubs time to build, or wait until 2011 to negotiate when economy may be stronger but doesn't give any new clubs much time to lay the foundations.
