Wear 'n' tear: Final curtain falls on Simmo's rep career

Whatever crystal ball they have is doing very well so far given some of the posts above, I think we've now beaten every top 8 team from last year...and that shows in just one little sentence that we have a very competitive team now. And for that I'm seriously happy about given what we had 2, 3, 4, 5 years ago.

While the next step we're no doubt working towards is a finals series, we have got ourselves to the stage where we satisfy the basic aim of a football club - and that is to have a competitive team on the park who can win regularly.

Stop talking complete sense Serc, there is no place for that here on this forum.

We have a State Of Origin quality halfback and fullback plus a hooker that will likely be there as well. Add to that a centre likely to be playing for New Zealand soon. Also, off the top of my head three former Origin playrs in Doogs, Simpson and Cross despite minutes played this year. How many more matchwinners do you need and what positions are they in?

The halves.

The ultimate way to judge the signings is if we win anything.

Make the 8 first and then we can discuss.

It all looks wonderful all these discards from other teams competing for us at high NRL level and winning games from time to time, but the only true way to judge all of these signings is if we actually win anything with them.

The improvement scale is upward. Top 8 this year is now expected.

Anything less is complete failure.

Then we can judge all of these signings.

Being competitive gets you nowhere in the end. Putting them out there and winning a few games against good opposition is fine and dandy, but its not the ultimate either.

Opening up the chequebook and signing a matchwinner or that superstar X Factor, can often prove the difference between being competitive and scraping in/missing the 8, or Top 4 and true title chances.

Some of these blokes might have been let go from their former team because while they have immense talents, they might not be good under pressure in semi final games? Thats just pure speculation , however we wouldn't know because they've never been there yet for the Knights.

Time will tell fellas. Time will tell.

Lol..

Few weeks down the track when we keep winning games it will be something like:

"The best way to judge the signings is if we indeed win the Minor Premiership. Then, and only then, will we know.."

I admire the fact that rather than accept you were wrong (or perhaps just pushing the 'negative' agenda) you make a drawn-out post full of crap. Top marks for effort.

The halves.

Most teams (top 8 and not) dont have two proven X factered up match winners in the halves mate... We have one which is the same as nearly everyone barring perhaps brisbane and titans (melbourne i suppose but its not inglis' best position, he is there cos the don't have a 5/8).could be more that i can't think of right now but not many.

Hang on, since when is an end of season prediction of 10th wrong after 8 rounds of footy?

Ring any bells?

Der man!

He needs a good side kick and depth in the area. He is playing on a knifes edge after all!

We have only 3 people to play NRL halves in this club. Injuries to just 1 can ruin an entire season for the rest of the team. Most clubs have some kind of back up depth even if its nothing flash. I don't think we have any?

It doesn't have to be a super super star, but a solid match winner will do.

They let that one go to Penrith.

We have a solid history of having a superb half with a gumby playing next to him - heck Sean Rudder won a premiership in 2001! We have a quality fullback, halfback and hooker - thus far we have shown we can get by without a solid half to support Mullen...

For lack of a better term, my apologies. I'll make it clearer - I wasn't even talking about your prediction. I was talking about your ability to blatantly ignore positives and only comment on the negatives to suit your (now bordering on pathetic) agenda. When these positives were brought up, naturally you downplayed them.

As (I will give you 'if') they get better, they will need to do more and more to impress you despite exceeding pre-season expectations.

No mate. You've turned your argument again to suit you. You said we never sign any genuine matchwinners and they're the difference between the top 8, top 4 and premiership. To which I replied we have Mullen and Kidley + De Gois and Sau on the up. Mullen is a SOO quality half. I then asked what area do we need to strengthen with a matchwinner and you said the halves? Clearly we have three NRL quality halves despite anyone's thoughts on Dureau and Rogers. Plus Hilder, Karawana and Gidley at the outset. That's not even the point though. We have 2 genuine matchwinners and 2 great young buys who will be matchwinners.

They say the key to good teams is 1,6,7,9.

You have named 3 of them. We have 3 covered fine.

I'm saying the matchwinner that could prove to be the difference at this club is another 6 or 7.

Simple.

Bird, Carney... Hell even some of the gun young halves around in the Under 20's.

Anyone with class will do to complement what we already have. Spending big money on a winger ( uate ) is sure not going to do it.

Saying we won a comp with Rudder etc, which is what some people may try and say, is all well and good, but he played outside the greatest player of all time, and all respect to Mullen, but while a great footballer, he can't carry the team by himself in the halves forever.

Not if we are going to be serious about winning a competition.

Thats an interesting list isn't it.

Since 1997 , the only competitions won by teams without 2 top line halves have been teams featuring Andrew Johns, Darren Lockyer, Brad Fittler... 3 of the greatest players of all time.

Its unrealistic to expect Mullen to do it in the halves alone.

i wouldn't call jamie lyon a top line half. top line centre for sure though.

same goes for matt geyer. very handy player... but hardly cream of the crop in terms of 5/8ths.

i also thought anasta was playing off the bench in '04... but i really could be wrong on that one.

And in a few years time Karma, you will look back at it and read

"the only competitions won by teams without 2 top line halves have been teams featuring Andrew Johns, Darren Lockyer, Brad Fittler, Scott Dureau... 4 of the greatest players of all time."
