Webb out, Kaufusi in for Origin I

May 22, 2007 - 10:49AM

Queensland forward Carl Webb has been ruled out of Wednesday night's State of Origin series opener at Suncorp Stadium, replaced by Melbourne's Antonio Kaufusi.

Webb suffered a hamstring strain at training on Sunday and will not take his place in the Maroons side on Wednesday night after failing a brief fitness test on Tuesday morning.

Storm prop Kaufusi joined the Queensland squad as 18th man on Monday and will now make his Origin debut.

Kaufusi is likely to come off the bench with Canberra rookie Neville Costigan expected to be promoted from the interchange into the starting backrow.

Saw Kaufusi in a trial match this year ... he's got a definite presence of intimidation on the field. We won't be missing much, except Webb's probably got a bit more offload ability.

Feel for Carl Webb though ... the guy recovers in record time from a broken jaw and then pulls a hammy of all things ...

What a terrible halves pairing, esp. for the key positions in a football side.

You roaches would be better off if you started worrying about your own footy sides for a change. You all seem obsessed with the Queensland team and what we do.

As a Queenslander, you could put Dally Messenger's bones in a blue jersey and I wouldn't care.

What will that say of NSW if they lose?

I agree

Costigan and Carrol may make an average backrow but, Dallas Johnson is a quality player

wat a load of crap locky

one of ur best

Costigan has been good all year for Canberra and whilst Carroll isnt in the best of form, his defence and presence counts for a whole lot

to be honest, I have not seen much of Costigan this year, I just never really rated him

Yet you're making judgements on how good he'll be?

you are right, I did not have the right to say that, but I was basing it on what I do know about him

I actually have a massive soft spot for the Raiders, I just have not been following football that much this year (HSC is my priority), I just never rated Costigan when he played with the Broncs

might have something to do with the fact he didnt get a huge amount of opportunites at a regular first grade spot, something he has nailed down at canberra

I remember an incident last year involving him, I can imagine that that would have set him back a bit

He got plenty of opportunities. He just kept blowing them by doing stupid things, on and off the field. He played the majority of the 2004 season. After that he just went downhill.

With Neville costigan there is a thin line between him having a superb game and an awful game. If he doesnt fumble the ball, throw a stupid pass or give away multiple penalties he will go good. I know raiders fans love him, but i have watched nearly all of his first grade career including this year and he has a long way to go to be a great player.
