Wellar & Junior

Everyone knows that to be a top 4 side in the NRL you simply cannot lose anything when your 14-17 enter the field of play.

I have been extremely concerned about our bench early in the season with many of the points being scored against us through poor defensive reads and efforts.

Against Penrith both Wellar and Junior lifted and IMO had season best games and I simply put it down to who the opposition was. "The Bro's"

However again yesterday against the Dragons Junior consitantly got over the advantage line and Wellar was very aggressive and involved in everything. He was really doing the 1% well.

For our season to continue to grow it is critical that both these boys keep rising and be known as one of the best / toughest bench's in the NRL!!

I thought Junior was better last week against the Panthers. He still had a good game yesterday!

He's a real metre maker who can be tough to bring down.

Hauraki is quickly becoming the enforcer defensively.

Riddell being used from the bench helped the rotation yesterday. Oake played decently as well. With Cordoba still to come back from injury we are looking reasonable on the bench at the moment. Still would like to see Moimoi coming off the bench though and Paulo or Cordoba (when fit) starting.

Wellar and Junior have huge Futures, Let's hope we can hang on Wellar as he's off contract. All that off season crap affected them but they are starting to come good now.

And I would leave Riddell on the bench, Keating is so much better starting the game!! He's passing and overall game creams all over Pigs.

I dunno what Hags told the boys but they've pulled their finger out big time and making a real impact..
I'm real impressed with Junior.. Soward made him look glued to the grass yesterday but he had a good game otherwise - gets his legs pumping and is always good for an offload.
Love those little short passes he's been pumping out.. get him running wide and dumping off to Hayne & we'll see plenty more linebreaks.
Wellar should be a priority signing.. even over Chad imo. I think Wellar will keep getting better.. whereas Chad is consistently well above average but not a real impact player.

They were hitting it up wider and interchanging passes between the forwards and some running off Finch. This made all the difference.

Oake looks like he still needs some more fitness though to play in the NRL...he was running up and down on the spot when that Dragon (forget who it was) got past him.

I think the pitch had more to do with that than anything. Watched that game and the Bulldogs game and there were players skating all over the place...

Being a former prop I know what this feels like......:p

You see, If everyone were watching the game closely enough they'd realise that practically everytime Finch or Burt went to kick, Junior and our other forwards were 30 metres down field getting themselves into position for the next set of defense.

The constant charge downs meant Junior and co had to then turn and run all the way back upfield to defend the new set or in some cases get into position to attack.

I don't think this can be ignored in assessing why Junior was sucking in the big ones yesterday.

Something has to be done about our kicking. Maybe its more protection for the kickers.....Brisbane used to do this to great effect when they used to position Petro and Webke practically in front of their kickers......

What I liked is that for the last two games, Paulo and Hauraki have been running the ball HARD, and tackling even harder! If they can keep this up, the future is looking brighter.

There are a few ways to get the ball away safely and they are pretty simple.
1) Have two or three players pretecting a kicker

2) have 3 kickers lines up (Finch, Burt, Mateo/Keating plus hooker). Have then in a triangle, one to the left and right of the play the ball, and have Burt in a position to recieive the ball if the kicker can not get the ball away.

3) have the kick run onto the ball, and kick while in motion instead of standing still. This makes the kicker a more difficult target.

4) have a backline move ready, this allows ball movement on the last when wingers and fullbacks are not in the line, makes the defence also second guess coming up.

5) kick on the 4th when about the 40 meter mark in you own teritory, if the kick is not on you always have a back-up play on the next play.

Morris fell into heaps of tackles!!! It was almost to the point I thought he might have needed new boots!
