West Tigers and the Salary Cap

Cant disagree......... what a mess. Sure looks like Marshall will go (lack of WT funds to make a good offer)- the "also ran" players who have contracts ending 2009 - Galea, Payne & Trimarchi cannot possibly free up enough funds. Morris's contract is ending too but from the recent "Morris is the best" articles we are seeing I suspect he will get an offer to extend, Apart from Marshall, that leave Collis (probably going to Bulldogs), Halatau and Tagive with contracts ending this year.

Newbys coming up from lower grades for a year are Lazarus, Ayshford and Dunley.

I just cant see enough funds being generated to make a god offer for Benjo (should he be fit enough) and fill the other holes referred to above with those palyers leaving.

Benji will be making around $950,000 during the offseason if he plays Rugby in Japan. If Wests Tigers don't have a problem with him playing in Japan in the offseason then he will probably show his loyalty and probably wont ask for as much money as he would if he didn't play rugby in Japan. If he gets around $350,000 from Wests Tigers than that's $1,300,000 a year altogether. I don't think he'll complain. We look after him he'll look after us, hopefully :)

NRL might not allow it to happen. Depends on how the WT and Benji are preapred to play it- if both sides trust each other and dont sign contracts until the Japanese stint ends the NRL would seem to be powerless to intrude- if any contract or intent to contract is signed NRL have a say and we know they would not allow Gower to play RU in France off season.

In a worse case secnaio following the trrust path above and no contract or intent i signed- what happens if Benji is injured in Japan? At the very last moment WT have no player and too late to recruit another- mind you- we have enough experience with that this year- why should next year be any different????

Benji's body cant handle the rigors of the NRL season so to play another 10 or so games will be interesting. Okay rugby in Japan probably isnt that physical but when ever you run on a field theirs dangers and the more you do it the more danger their is.

Yep, thats my concern. As much as I like Benji I'm more and more certain its time he should move on for the good of both parties. WT have got to start remembering they are a business venture not a social club- play hardball guys and make some tough decisions- stop trying to be best at everything EXCEPT a football team.

I dont think they have any choice- they cant afford him if they are in such financial tightropes.

BTW- WT have actually got around to contracting a number of players capable of playing 1/2 or 5/8 this year (immaterial of Morris)-Moltzen, Lewis, Dunley etc. They do have options.
