Western Suburbs Magpies

Continued nostalgia. This time we look at the mighty Magpies. I always had a soft spot for them and 98/99 seasons not withstanding, they were always a competitive team who had bad luck with injuries it seemed year after year. They were a decent team in the early 90's, a bit poor in the 80's.

What are some of your memories relating to the Western Suburbs Magpies? Do you have an merchandise? Share your experiences that are Western Suburbs related.

For me, I had an old victa NSWRL jersey and did have an away predominately white black v jersey too many moons ago but it got knicked off the clothes line. We had an cranky magpie that used to live near my parents house that we called Tommy.

Wests v Doggies, around 1992 play off for 5th position on a Tuesday night.

Their last NRL game against the Warriors in 1999 is a stand out too, probably not so much for Magpies fans

Although the 99 side gets labeled as the worst club side ever, they had a halfback and fullback that won premierships later in their careers, along with Skandalis, meaning that side had three premiership winners in it.

Foundation club who won 4 premierships and 17 wooden spoons. In my football following life I can only ever remember them sucking. After a strong period in the late 70s that resulted in no titles they were generally crap until they merged with Balmain. You get the sense that they were swallowed up in this merger as they seem to represent far less than 50%.

Originally Western Suburbs represented the inner western suburbs like Ashfield and Lidcombe. They only became linked with Campbelltown after they were expelled by the NSWRL in 1983 and then won a court case to get reinstated. Newtown were representing that area, they were also expelled, so Wests decided to fill that void and moved to Orana Park at Campbo in 87.

I loved their clean, classic jersey design and logo.

The Fibros v Silvertails doco is a good one.

The Tigers side of the JV is struggling so badly I can imagine Wests taking over the license if Balmain collapses.

Yeah like you would know. Talking to you about Rugby League is like asking Pamela Anderson about string theory.

That was 1991,and again in 1992 they made the 5,but injuries crueled their chances.

You know shit.

In 1908 they represented all areas west of newtown and south of souths. Over the years Saints (therefore Cronulla), Canterbury, Parramatta (therefore Penrith) were established as SRL, NSWL, ARL and NRL clubs from the Magpies original area.

They relinked with Campbelltown one of their original areas in the 80s.

They had some great periods over the decades. It is harsh to judge them on their overall performances from the 80s onwards as they were kicked out twice only to fight their way back in with court cases just before the seasons began; so had to establish teams on late notice.

They had some half decent teams (semi finalists) in the 1970s and 1990s.

The aftermath of the superleague war took its toll of Western Surburbs in the late 90s with limited finances and therefore a player drain resulting in the teams of 98 and 99.

But, the worst every club side ever can't land on their lap; with University in the early days and Eastern Surburbs (who did not win a game) in 1966 must wear that title.

I have a fair bit of memorabilia - limited edition posters, signed limited edition of "Buckets of Blood, Cloud of Dust" - history of the magpies, jerseys etc.

Top thread, nice to see one of Australian rugby league's founding clubs remembered. Bring them back I say.
