HOME GAME ALLOCATIONS FOR ANNIVERSARY YEAR
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wests Tigers will open its 10th anniversary celebration year with a home game against Canberra Raiders at Campbelltown Sports Stadium.

The club has today announced its home ground matches for the 2009 Telstra Premiership, which kicks off on the weekend of March 13-16.

Campbelltown Sports Stadium will host three home matches against Canberra (Rd 1), Newcastle Knights (Rd 7) and Brisbane Broncos (Rd 11).

The home match against the Brisbane Broncos will co-incide with celebrations of the club’s very first premiership match against the Broncos played at Campbelltown on February 6, 2000.

“Campbelltown Stadium will undergo renovations after the Broncos game,’’ said Wests Tigers CEO Scott Longmuir.

“It is expected the renovations will take approximately 12 months to be completed.’’

Like Campbelltown Sports Stadium, traditional home ground Leichhardt Oval will again host three home matches – Melbourne Storm (Rd 6), Penrith (Rd 13) and Cowboys (Rd 19).

“There is a good, strong rivalry now between Wests Tigers and the Cowboys since we beat them in the 2005 Grand Final. Playing at historical Leichhardt Oval will just add to the occasion even more,’’ Mr Longmuir said.

As part of its new two-year-deal with the Sydney Cricket Ground and Sports Trust, Wests Tigers will play five home games at the Sydney Football Stadium and one home game at the SCG in 2009.

“The Sydney Football Stadium has built up a reputation as a great rugby league ground that provides plenty of atmosphere for supporters and players,’’ Mr Longmuir said.

The home matches at the Sydney Football Stadium are against Sydney Roosters (Rd 3), St George-Illawarra (Rd 16), Manly (Rd 21), Parramatta (Rd 24) and Bulldogs (Rd 26).

Wests Tigers will again play South Sydney in round 10 at the Sydney Cricket Ground as part of the NRL Heritage Round. The two clubs played at the SCG this year as part of the Heritage Round with Wests Tigers recording a 30-10 victory.

“One of the real highlights of the SCG game was seeing so many people enjoying the chance to run onto the ground after full-time,’’ Mr Longmuir said.

“We will work with the Trust to see if we can again provide this rare opportunity. The match also marks the 40th anniversary of the 1969 Grand Final between Balmain Tigers and South Sydney’’

Mr Longmuir encouraged supporters to get behind their team by becoming a proud Wests Tigers member in 2009.

“Our membership packages provide more flexibility, more value for money and are packed full with great new benefits and opportunities for you to get up close and personal with your team,’’ he added.

LOL...Roosters home game at SFS, typical. $$$ before points.
Nicely positioned in a block of three away games.

We should all be infinitely grateful to our new masters for affording us the relative luxury of watching NRL games at the traditional home grounds.

Longmuir has been championing the cause of the fans from the beginning and if not for his persistent negotiations with boss, I doubt we could have secured home games of such high calibre.

There are only mentions of our rivalries with Nth Qld Cowboys and Brisbane, and it begs the question why the article doesn't elaborate on our rivalries with the remaining four sides that we'll be playing at CS and LO.

It would be fitting to commemorate some of the special moments that have occurred when the Wests Tigers have played each of these teams at the respective venues.

Canberra at CS - Darren Senter scoring the softest try in modern footy in 2001.

Newcastle at CS - Ben Jefferies MOM effort in 2002 against the 1/2 strength Knights.

Brisbane at CS - Baby Broncos in 2002.

---

Melbourne at LS - Bill Slater's boot and George Skando's head.

Penrith at LS - Glen Air's fleeting time spent as halfback in 2001.

Cowboys at LS - WT's solitary victory over the turd Morrison in 2001

If we have the sh.ts, just think how bad it is for the players. As I have said many times the only advantage we have over the heavy weights is our home ground and we give it away. We are not strong enough to be giving even the cellar dewlers a leg up.

I have a gut feeling the bubble has just burst, and 2009 will see a decline in the support for the team and maybe this will be a good thing and the board may take notice.

Indeed.

They are obviously gambling on our on-field results improving in order to maintain support.
