Joel Edwards try with seven minutes left has propelled the Wests Tigers to an upset 18-16 win over the North Sydney Bears in the Intrust Super Premiership NSW match played at Chatswood Oval this afternoon.

Coming from 16-6 down with 15 minutes to play, the Tigers showed great determination to score their first win for the Intrust Super Premiership NSW win – and send the Bears crashing to their first season loss.

In a tight and tough opening period, the Tigers showed that they meant business when hooker Jacob Liddle burst clear from dummy half in the 17th minute from half way to send five-eighth Justin Hunt away for his first try under the posts. Jordan Rankin converted for a 6-0 Tigers lead.

The Bears then worked their way into field position for former Melbourne Storm and Newcastle Knights prop Robbie Rochow to step into the clear 13 minutes later, before being brought down close to the Tigers’ line.

Bears halfback Eli Levido then darted past the backpedalling Tigers defence to score on the next tackle. Levido converted his own try to level scores up at 6-6.

The scores remained level at half-time despite both sides having half chances late in the first half.

As both sides probed for the opening as the arm wrestle continued through the middle to start the second half, the Bears took full advantage from two Tigers errors – both from kicks – to take the lead.

First, Tigers winger Luke Garner dropped a high Luke Kelly midfield bomb 14 minutes into the second half to give the Bears a scrum feed and field position from close range.

Bears winger Abbas Miski finished a neat left sided short side move at the end of the set from the scrum to score in the corner and give the Bears the lead at 10-6.

Nine minutes later, Tigers fullback Watson Heleta made a terrible mess of misjudging another Kelly midfield bomb.

Heleta allowed the ball to bounce instead of taking the spiralling kick on the full; Levido pounced on the bouncing ball coming through on the chase and toed the ball ahead to the in-goal area to score his second try under the posts.

Levido converted his own try and the Bears almost looked home with a 16-6 lead.

The Tigers, however, were not to be denied.

Forcing a Bears mistake with 12 minutes left, the Tigers got sufficient field position for halfback Rankin to send a cross field kick on the last tackle of the next set for Hunt to make a spectacular leap and mid-air catch on the full to dive over for his second try.

Ranking converted to set up the grandstand finish at 16-12 as the match entered the last 10 minutes.

With seven minutes left, a left sided move late in the tackle count saw Hunt break clear and time his pass beautifully for Edwards to crash over and score. Rankin nailed the conversion and the Tigers were back in front.

The Tigers defence then just held on in a frenetic closing five minutes in the face of waves of late North attack inside the Tigers 20 metre area to clinch their first win of the season.

The Tigers will now face up to Mounties at Leichhardt Oval next Saturday, while the Bears have to pick themselves up for a meeting with Canterbury-Bankstown at Belmore Sports Ground next Saturday.

Forgotten all about the 'reserves'.

Tigers Scrape Together Second Win

The Wests Tigers have held off a resilient Blacktown Workers Sea Eagles side to clinch their second victory of the season in what proved to be a physical encounter at Leichhardt Oval. The Sea Eagles will be ruing their missed opportunities with a Brendan Attwood double not enough to secure their side’s third win in as many games.

The game began in disastrous fashion for the Wests Tigers as the opening kick-off torpedoed in the air and took a wicked bounce that found the dead-ball line. The Sea Eagles looked threatening with their first attacking opportunity in the opening minutes. As luck would have it, a Sea Eagles knock-on would spare the Tigers from an embarrassing start to the game.

The first try of the afternoon came in the ninth minute when Cameron Cullen spotted some lazy defense in the middle of the ruck and burst through to set up his front-rower Taealoaloa Amone, who strode in under the sticks for the first points of the match. Matthew Wright had no issues with the conversion.

Some grinding football was the answer for both sides after points before Cameron Cullen lost the ball 40 metres out from his own line. This proved crucial as the Tigers marched into the attacking 20-metre zone which allowed Jordan Rankin and Veiru mapesone to link and put their winger Ryland Jacobs over in the corner. Rankin converted with a curling kick which Johnathan Thurston would have been proud of, nicking the upright to lock the scores up at 6-6.

The Tigers looked to have scored the very next set through Kyle Lovett but he was ruled to have made a second effort as the try was disallowed for a double movement.

It proved a costly error as the Sea Eagles marched down the field off the back of that penalty and a Pita Godinet kick proved too tricky to handle for Watson Heleta, who fumbled with Brendan Attwood picking up the scraps to score. Matthew Wright failed to convert with some help from the Leichhardt faithful.

The Sea Eagles looked to be on the front foot with an exciting interchanging of passes and offloads. However it seemed as though there may have been one too many, with Jayden Wheelhouse snatching a wayward pass and diving into the corner to lock things up at 10-10. Rankin missed his kick to the left of the uprights, leaving the scores locked.

A sloppy error saw the Sea Eagles hit straight back through some simple catch-and-pass play for Kelepi Manu to dive in the corner to again snatch the lead back from the home side. Wright again failed to convert his sides try from the sideline.

Kyle Lovett would soon have his redemption for his costly double-movement, as he made no mistake in charging over some weak defense to score. Rankin made sure his side would take the lead into the half-time break with his conversion.

The second half saw the Tigers start much better than the first; they forced an error from Shaun Lane and instantly made them pay with Darcy Cox holding onto a pass from Jeremy Marshall-King, who crashed over right next to the posts. The home side took a commanding lead early in the second stanza.

It wasn’t long before the Tigers went in again with a raid on the Sea Eagles short side and Watson Heleta finding the in-goal for the Tigers fifth try of the afternoon. Another tough conversion was successful from Rankin as the Tigers began to cement their lead.

An outstanding effort from the Sea Eagles was what it took to hit back, as the second kick in the play saw Viliami Kaveinga leap for the ball and offload in the same motion to find Brendan Attwood, who secured his second try of the afternoon.

A spirited Sea Eagles side tried in vain to run down the deficit but a steely Tigers defensive effort saw the scoreline remain.

The eight-point lead ended up being enough for the Tigers as the halves took control and wore the clock and their opposition down to seal their second win of the season. Showing plenty of promising signs, the Wests Tigers will be hoping to build on their performance and carry it into next week’s game as they take on the Newcastle Knights – once again at Leichhardt Oval.

Wests Tigers 28 (R Jacobs, J Wheelhouse, K Lovett, D Cox, W Heleta tries; J Rankin 4 goals) def Blacktown Workers Sea Eagles 20 (B Attwood 2, T Amone, K Manu tries; M Wright 2 goals)

Milone has been demoted to the wing & he retains captaincy.Undoubtedly this impostor is well connected as there's no way in the world that his selection is merit based.Marsters is ahead of this bum in the pecking order for centres.

Btw when was the last time a winger was the captain ?

Tiger Ted, how about:

Liddle given more game time at 9 in reserves,
Marshall-King moved from 9 to 6
Littlejohn from 6 to 7
Rankin from 7 to 2 = No more Milone,

Yep OTT those changes would certainly b in the best interests of the team & the club however politics in team selections has always been rife in tigertown !

this team was always going to be ok once they got their spine back. they were missing 3 of their spine for the first 6 weeks or so. if both them and 1st grade stay healthy they should be around the top 4 come the end of the year.

The Wests Tigers have recorded back-to-back wins in the Intrust Super Premiership NSW, following a dominant 42-26 win over the Newcastle Knights at Leichhardt Oval.

In a slow start to the season, the hosts recorded their second win last week, beating Blacktown by eight points. The Knights, on the other hand, were looking to bounce back after last week’s disappointing loss to the Bulldogs in Cessnock. Newcastle were led by Trent Hodkinson, who was dropped from first grade duties for the second week in a row.

In a high-intensity start, the Knights found themselves with the better of the field position in the opening five minutes of the match, but came up empty handed. The visitors looked to have had the line wide open, but a one-on-one strip saved the Tigers.

When Wests finally got possession, a high kick brought about a mistake and they were soon on the prowl. But it was the same story for the Tigers who forced three repeat sets at the Newcastle end but could not capitalise.

The home side’s depth was tested early, with Jack Littlejohn leaving the field for a Head Injury Assessment.

Discipline was proving a concern for the Knights, with back-to-back penalties allowing Wests to set up camp on their line. It was only a matter of time before the defence cracked, with second-rower Kyle Lovett crashing over for a 6-0 lead.

Penalties again gifted the Tigers downfield and a fortunate bounce off his own grubber kick, Jordan Rankin extended his side’s lead to 12 in the 22nd minute.

The home side were taking control, making metres up field at will, and when centre Watson Heleta weaved his way through, the score was 18-0.

Needing to be the next to score, Newcastle had some luck off the kick-off with an error putting them at the right end of the field, and a few plays later Jacob Gagan found some space to score in the corner.

The Knights had a lucky escape inside the final six minutes of the half when Tom Hughes was lucky to prevent a try after dropping a high ball in his own in-goal. But their luck did not last long with Heleta strolling over for his second, as Wests took a 24-6 lead into half-time.

There were little chances early in the second half as both defences held strong. That was until an error from the Tigers off a Hodkinson cross field kick gave the Knights easy field position. The margin was again cut to 12 when Lachlan Fitzgibbon broke through a tackle from close range.

Another Wests mistake from the high ball, allowed Gagan to record his second of the afternoon, and get the red-and-blues to within eight.

The Knights appeared to have made it three tries in a row when Gagan regained a chip kick - only to throw the ball forward to teammates with the line wide open. The Tigers made them regret that missed opportunity, marching back downfield with Heleta finishing off to push the score out to 30-16 midway through the half.

Newcastle continued to have trouble containing Heleta who crossed for his fourth of the afternoon, and made the mountain for the Knights to climb almost impossible.

However, trailing 36-16, the visitors did not stop trying; a short kick off gave them possession and a cut-out ball from Hodgkinson allowed Hughes to hit back immediately in the corner.

But they could not continue that intensity in final 10 minutes, with Wests adding further to the pain when winger Nathan Milne pushed the margin out to 22 points.

There was a consolation try in the dying stages to Newcastle’s Fitzgibbon, who brought up his double, but it had little bearing on the result.

If the Panthers can beat Blacktown tomorrow afternoon, the Tigers are assured of moving off the bottom of the ladder.

Wests Tigers 42 (W Heleta 4, J Rankin, K Lovett, N Milone tries; J Rankin 7 goals) def Newcastle Knights 26 (J Gagan 2, L Fitzgibbon 2, T Hughes tries; T Hodkinson 3 goals)

apparently Rancid had an absolute blinder playing in the halves.

Round 9 Team of the Week includes:

4 – Watson Heleta (c)
Club: Wests Tigers; 2017 TOTW selections: 0.

21 total runs, 181 total metres, one try-assist, one line-break-assist, five line-breaks, 15 tackle-breaks, one offload, four tries.
While Heleta fought off tough competition in halfback Rankin for the Team of the Week captaincy, he was named the player of the round following a simply outstanding game against the Knights. The numbers speak for themselves as the utility back scored four tries and laid on another in a dominant win at Leichhardt Oval.

7 – Jordan Rankin
Club: Wests Tigers; 2017 TOTW selections: 0.

10 total runs, 113 total metres, one line-break, one tackle-break, 370 kick metres, one try, seven goals.
The Tigers halfback was second only to Heleta as the best on ground for the Tigers, racking up an exceptional 18 points and putting the Knights to the sword. Rankin performed well with the boot both in and out of general play; he kicked for 370 metres during the game and also slotted seven conversions from as many attempts in Round 9, in addition to a first-half try.

Heleta has ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS been a center. Moving him to fullback was completely ridiculous, JT ruined his development. The guy could have been an NRL ready center by now if he wasn't stuffed around with the stupid fullback move.

I always thought Rankin needed to move back to the halves in reggies. He should seek compensation from JT for the anal rape his form was delivered by being moved to winger/fullback. I actually hope we re-sign him for depth in the halves next year.

Actually, I hope we f**k Moses off and get Beau Scott in return for this year + next year. Rankin couldn't possibly be worse than Moses' current form + we get a grizzled veteran back rower to mentor the young up and comers and just smash some merkins in general
