What exactly do you think Smith is coaching wrong?

We're all bewildered that our team struggles so much.....everyone's got an opinion on why - most believe its the coaching....I'm interested to see them in one thread.

So I propose we write a list of what we believe to be problems with the coaching....DO NOT GO INTO DETAIL - just a simple statement....I'll start with a couple:

1) Lack of fitness
2) Players out of position (eg. Burt)

1. Kicking out on the full from kick offs
2. Kick offs failing to go 10 metres
3. Team selections.
4. Last tackle options
5. Fitness
6. Marker defence
7. Defensive patterns
8. Attacking patterns.
9. Lack of discipline. too many penalties

Players hate his guts.
He's rooting the CEO.
He lets good players go to other teams.
He buys second rate players from Souths to replace them.
He's lost touch with the game.
He's never won a premiership.
He thinks he knows more than anyone.
He let Noel Cleal go.

1 He overcoaches
2 He is moody and inconsistent with the players
3 He treats the players like little kids
4 He refuses to learn from or accept responsibility for his results
5 He can't accept that RL is basically a simple game and not rocket science
6 He has not recovered from 2001 and fears being in the same position again

His players aren't enjoying the game
No enthusiasm
players going through the motions
Trying to micromanage every nano-second of the game.

Well you can't attribute kick offs going out on the full and not 10m to coaching - I'd be pretty confident the boys aren't practicing that at training :D

-overcoaching on minor trivial matters
-theory on bigger is better is imagination of smithy-look at top 2 sides-mobile and average size packs
-players play like robots and not like passionate, creative and in an enjoyable manner
-smithy is a dominator not a facilitator and creator of team growth and harmony-its not his nature-not his fault but not everyone can be likeable yet intelligent like Bennett and Stuart.
-they play too much before the line and accross field instead of at the line and past the line and second phase play is overidden by one out powerful charges with no variety
-want more points?

Oh, and 2 more gems I recall Ray Price saying way back in 99.

He takes all the enjoyment out of the game for the players.
He's a schoolteacher not a football coach.

Also many of you will recall his response in 2001 when asked why the team was performing so well. Quote " I don't really know" unquote. Classic!!!

Did the players enjoy themselves in 2001?

Yes, and that's my point. Smith himself said he didn't understand why it was happening so he just basically left them to enjoy it. Pity he didn't stick with that formula.

Doesn't get down on the sidelinne hogging the camera saying Fxxxxx everytime something goes wrong.
Won't let the players go feral
Refuses to bow to the pressure of people like Ray Hadley. Stays focused on the job at hand.
Refuses to criticise players for making dumb mistakes like conceding penalties from kick off (at least in public)
Refuses to use excuses that he has ten on his main staff out injured or sidelined
Refuses to drop a bloke like Daniel Wagon after he makes nearly 40 tackle a game
Shows too much loyalty to his players and doesn't get any back
They are just some to ponder on.

Over coaches

Has tooo many Assistant coaches who just confuse things
Comes up with different game plans for different situations therefore confusing players all the time when its really a simple game.

Does not let players play there natural game at all.

Just let them play Brian its a f**king simple game which u just complicate more and more. Our players brains have been over cooked with your damn methods to the state that when the ball comes to them they choke and dont know what to do with it.

It does not take a professor to coach a football team. All it is abit of Man mangement and and having a simple game plan.

Can't win a f***ing game... there's something else to ponder ;-)
When he's finished being such a fantastic guy, why doesn't he try coaching.

Smithy doesnt know how to get our team to grow-we are declining in every way1
Whoever good we produce either goes worse eg. Vella or wants to leave eg.Lyon
Why do players get to a stage only for Smithy to lecture him and worry him and create a science solution when its a game of physical passion and teamwork?
The answer lies in his personality-the better the players get the morehe wants to interfere in their progress which then stops or bores them.
If i was playing for him and he showed me something on a whiteboard, i would get the impression he is getting too smart.

That is the stupidist comment I have read in this forum.

I'm sorry but the whole whiteboard shit is just some crap that R*y H*dley wrote in his article.

If you are trying to communicate something spatial with someone, then a frickin whiteboard is a bloody good way to do it....I would be prepared to bet any money that every coach in the NRL uses a whiteboard at some stage....the whiteboard is NOT an issue!

I agree that it seems Smithy is not capable of instilling passion into the team - we lack it immensely....but people harping on this whiteboard shit is just plain stupid.

I agree with you strider on the issue of the whiteboard.
People are going on about it like it's a crime or something.
Hadley just doesn't like it that Smith bad mouthed him on radio, he'll try and get back at him any way he can, including ridiculous comments about....yes, a whiteboard.
