He came out of Texas (I think) with big wraps but never produced in the NFL.
Any comments on what went wrong?

Couldnt stay out of trouble.

His game was OK, but he was a terror off the field.

Didn't he get done for drink driving or something?
I understand what you're saying about getting into trouble off the field but I just don't understand these guys.
They get everything handed to them and they still don't get it.
I know a lot of them come from the mean streets and they just can't let go of the hood but this is a chance of a lifetime.
What are they thinking??

he got arrested for apparently driving a boat drunk. he accused the police of some bad thigns.

ends out that he was acquitted... but he wont play in the NFL again. his inconsistency combined with his other off-field problems have f**ked him over.

he can go to the CFL or arena league and make decent money...

There are people who get nothing handed to them and break the law.....

I read in article before that him and Alexander met with the Lions. I don't think anything came of it though.....

EDIT: Found it

LIONS VISIT WITH ALEXANDER, BENSON

Posted by Mike Florio on September 16, 2008, 9:20 p.m. EDT
Two of the highest-profile free-agent running backs are finally getting some interest, from one of the worst teams through two weeks in the NFL.
We’re told that Shaun Alexander, the 2005 NFL MVP, and Cedric Benson, the fourth overall pick in the 2005 draft, quietly visited with the Lions on Tuesday.
Both presumably emerged from the team facility with all of their luggage. It’s unclear whether either will get a contract.
Alexander expressed optimism more than a week ago that he’d soon have a new NFL team. Benson hasn’t gotten a sniff since being cut by the Bears following two alcohol-related arrests in less than a month.
The top running backs in Detroit are rookie Kevin Smith and veteran Rudi Johnson.

maybe I was a bit hash with my comment.
I don't know anything about these guys or what their life was like growing up or what pressures they are dealing with.
There are a lot of players working for charity and giving up their time doing good things in their communities but these stories don't make headlines do they?

He's had a few injuries too on top of the problems with the law.

It's a huge shame and I hope he can get back on track.

I remember when he was a rookie and "my" Dolphins had the 2nd pick in the draft....Didnt know if I preferred Ronnie Brown or Cedric Benson.

I'm glad we got who we did though!

Source.

The Bengals signed free agent RB Cedric Benson and placed RB DeDe Dorsey on the reserve/injured list, the team announced Tuesday.
Dorsey, a third-year player from Lindenwood College, played in this season’s first four games but suffered a hamstring injury last weekend against Cleveland.
Benson (5-11, 220; Texas) is a fourth-year NFL player. He was Chicago’s first-round selection in the 2005 draft (fourth overall) after a Texas career that included 5,540 rushing yards and the third-most touchdowns (64) in NCAA history.
Benson played in 35 games with 12 starts for the Bears from 2005-07, rushing for 1593 yards on 420 carries (3.8) with 10 TDs. He also had 26 receptions for 180 yards. He had an additional 104 rushing yards with a TD and 24 receiving yards in the 2006 postseason, as Chicago advanced to Super Bowl XLI against Indianapolis.
Last season, though missing five games with an injury, he posted career highs for rushing yards (674), receptions (17) and receiving yards (123). He started games No.1 through 11, but suffered a season-ending ankle injury on Nov. 25 vs. Denver and was placed Nov. 27 on Chicago’s reserve/injured list.
