What if you are innocent? Melbourne Storm

I would like someone to address the issue of the treatment meted out to the innocent professionals caught up in this football scandal, through no fault of their own.
Were a child in either secondary or primary school, be unfairly held responsible purely through association with others, of cheating, have their yearly report torn up, excluded from valid sporting events between schools, ostracized, then further punished by parading that child every week for months on end on the rostrum to the entire school population as an example of a cheat, I have absolutely no doubt, authorities would immediately be called in; charges of abuse laid against the perpetrators of such heinous behavior, and they would be immediately stood down from their positions.
Were the same treatment meted out in the workplace to an employee, who has been found wanting, but allowed to keep their job, and paraded weekly to their entire workforce and clients in the manner the NRL proposes to parade these young professionals, I also have absolutely no doubt, there would be immediate legal action against the perpetrators of this heinous behavior, and they would be found guilty of bullying and abuse, and be sacked.
It is beyond the pale, that these young professional footballers, through no fault of their own, are being forced to turn up to play football, for months on end, risk injury, humiliation, shame, public ridicule and televised nationally and internationally for all the world to see, under the conditions the NRL has set. This will have serious ramifications for their mental health.
Just who does the heirachy think they are that they can mete out this inhumane, abhorrent, abusive directive to these proud young men, who have had their world shattered. It beggars belief, that anyone in any position of authority in the league will let this happen without a damn good fight.
It beggars belief, that the NRL heirachy believe, that people like myself, simple rugby league fans, will be party to this callous, ugly treatment of their own” innocent” football family members.
Australia has a proud history of a fair go, and picking up a person when he’s down. We also believe in the punishment fitting the crime. We have watched scandal, after scandal hit Rugby league, but never such abusive behavior towards it’s victims has been witnessed until now. There are many footballers, in and out of the game, who will look at these innocent young men, and know, “there, but for the grace of god, go I.”
Most I have spoken to have no qualms about the penalties and fines laid on the Melbourne Storm, and their loss of points so far this year, however, unanimously, the punishment of the young innocent professionals is abhorrent to all. We are not talking about any player who knowingly, took illegal monies above the salary cap. It is time for them to come forward, stand up as an adult, and accept the responsibility of their actions on their team mates. These innocent young men must be allowed to compete in a legitimate game of football in the league, they did not cheat, they are the victims here. Failing that, they should be given the opportunity to leave the competition with no penalty and their contracts paid out should they fail to obtain a suitable contract elsewhere, either here or overseas.
Anything less, is abuse; dare I add, vindictive and completely unbecoming the NRL.
Brisbane, Bronco supporter.

Are you Craig Bellamy? These "innocent young men" have not been wronged by the NRL. They have been wronged by their club and a few greedy team-mates. They need to look within, rather than adopting the victim mentality & pointing the finger.

End of story.

Sweet post bro! Awesome!

It did sound like you were making a point though.
I doubt it will affect their mental health. If a footballer doesnt go loony from having Willie Mason or Ben Hannant running at them every week, then this wont affect them overly. It may cause a few players to go overseas or retire though which is a shame.
I think almost everyone has agreed that not allowing them to score points for the rest of this year is a bit over the top. We should be punishing the past, not the future. It will only drive more fans away from the Storm knowing that however hard they cheer there will be no result.
This is proffesional football, not kindergarten. What the NRL is doing may not be the best way to go about it, but they are not parading the players as cheats, but the Melbourne Storm administration. Liken it instead to a serial bully being made to apologise in front of an assembly etc.

The individual players themselves may or may not have cheated, but the club did. It is the club that has been denied the opportunity to accrue points and otherwise participate in NRL season 2010, not the individual players.

If the individual players themselves are upset about this I'm sure there will be plenty of opportunities to play for other clubs that don't deliberately rort the system.

Thank you, now that you all see the point of the thread, the team should be allowed to compete.

The NRL, could easily bring an adminstrator in for the entire club, toss the over paid, and allow innocents to play.

The club has been dealt with, and I and many are happy with the heavy handiness. They cheated, they got caught. Just like the dogs etc. etc.

Turning them in to a side show circus, is a really, really bad idea.

Bring the administrators in. Let them play ball. Give them some dignity.

Under the proposal at the moment - sure people will watch them play, and they will try. But week in week out, all they are gonna end up with is pity. A side show circus. Cant see how that would be good for the game.

i found your reference to the school a bit irrelevant. A closer analogy would be if the schools were competing in a contest and the winning school is revealed to have cheated. Do we strip the award from that school's kids?

Do the Knights and the Storm play again this year?

Speaking of children it reminded me of Bill V Patterson.

I would wager Chris has some return fire for little Billy Boy

You cannot punish the club without punishing the players. Blame the club for the wrongdoings if you are a player, not the NRL.

what punishment has been given to the players? as far as i can see all the penalties have been applied to the melbourne storm club not individuals

p.s. im getting bloody sick and tired of this endless discussion of whats fair for melbourne if they had been a bit 'fairer' with the salary cap we wouldnt be having this conversation i really cant believe fans from other clubs sticking up for them guess what by rorting the cap they cheated YOU they denied your team an opportunity to bid for players that would have to leave melbourne if they were under the cap and at the same time beat teams in the semis and grand finals with their illegal team that otherwise might have had a shot at a premiership

The Storm players and fans are the biggest victims in all this. But they are victims of a small contingent within their own club, not victims of the NRL. The NRL must act for the NRL as a whole, and in the interest of the NRL as a whole it is the best imperfect solution from a range of imperfect solutions.
