What might have been

He would have had Matt Elliot as a coach, and their captain at the time was Simon Woolford, who just so happened to play the same position as Smith.
So he was waiting to see what Richard Swain did before he decided what to do, if Swain had stayed he would have gone to Canberra to play behind a different hooker?
Ok.

I thought this was well known?

Anyway, Elliott probably would have tried to turn him into a halfback and ruined him.

The real kick in the guts is that, a year earlier, after Mal Meninga’s club coaching career came to an inglorious end, Craig Bellamy interviewed for the Raiders job but was unsuccessful, with Elliott appointed instead.

Then in 2004 we had Thurston all-but signed. Not sure why we missed out on that one but that’s life.

Could have been a very different decade. Smith and Thurston with Bellamy as coach? It’s enough to make a grown man cry.

There is a very simple time line that has Bellemy and Smith at the raiders

I’d like to live in that world, just to know what it was. But honestly I don’t think it’d be that different

I don’t think the raiders club was set up at that time and probably not know, to allow those people develop into what they are today.

But if they did, it’s fascinating to consider what becomes of players like Dugan and most particularly Carney if they were brought through a culture established by Bellemy and smith as we know them now

FWIW skeepes above post isn’t actually as clear as it should be

The raiders interviews Bellemy and had fully intended to offer him the job. They felt bad about cancelling the Matt Elliott interview and decided to just do it out of respect
They’d give Belly the job there after

Elliott blew them out of the water in his interview, and so it went. Haha

haha funny, that sounds a lot like a Warriors narrative. At one time, we were cashed up and looking for a coach. Apparently, Bellamy was in the conversation. We got Elliot. Someone was asked why we didn't get Bellamy and it was inferred that we opted for Elliot because he blew them away with vision in the interview.

I think that's how it went.

Elliot is like Bellamy's guardian angel, screwing him out of all the jobs that would have been terrible for him.

So they could have had Smith and Tedesco playing for them? Meh would somehow still finish 11th every other year

It's funny to hear these stories of Elliott's incredible vision for these different clubs and then to contrast it with the story of Phil Gould leaving a one-on-one with Elliott deeply unsure that the guy had any clue what he was talking about.

Yeah. Gould has more discernment that the idiots running the show in Auckland.
