At school today right during an assembly, as mr furry is school captain he had to stand up front for something with others (SRC and other captains). They played the Aussie Anthem + Kiwi Anthem. I sung the kiwi anthem, as in to myself, and I got in trouble for being "unpatriotic"... they yelled at me for not singing the Australian one. "You are captain you should be!"... They seemed surprised to know
I DON'T KNOW THAT ANTHEM!?!?

I may live in Australia but the fact is they are saying I am "obliged" to learn that anthem and be patriotic... It was ridiculous

Don't people who have just become Aussie citizens have to sing the anthem at the ceremony?

1. Don't know if they have to or not. I was born in Australia, but have lived in New Zealand at times and never learnt it.
2. It was a ceremony to do with Kiwi Exchange students we have, as they are leaving.

If you call yourself Australian you should know our National Anthem. How dont you know it anyway? They play it at every major Aussie sporting event.

Try being patriotic, you may just like it. I dont mean being a raving idiot, but a bit of pride in your country is a very good thing.

and learning or not learning what is IMHO a lousy song anyway makes a difference as to how you feel about your country ?? I wonder if those who accuse here can actually recite the second verse.

I thought this comment meant you were Australian. If you were born here doesnt that make you an Australian? Having lived in another country "at times" doesnt actually mean you are not an Australian citizen.

Im not trying to imply anything here mate but if you call yourself an Australian, then i feel strongly that you should know our anthem. If for whatever reason you dont call yourself Australian, then i dont mind at all.

Speaking Maori in my household, living over there for many years... That is not the point here though, i'm sayign that why am I getting into trouble for refusing to recite an anthem? Don't see footy players get into trouble for that for those who live in Australia and are kiwis

Patriotism is a pointless load of garbage forced on children by the Board of Education throughout school so they can grow up thinking that their country is better than everyone elses. I don't think you should "have" to know the national anthem and/or sing it.

Somehow this reminds me of a comment made by some idiotic sports presenter: "You have to go for Lleyton Hewitt because he's Australian". We damn well do not.

By the way, I am unpatriotic, unnationalistic and damn un-Australian, so if you were thinking of responding calling me something along those lines, don't bother. I've already done it. In fact, if you do wish to call me un-Australian, go for it. I'm proud.
