top post, pretty much put words to my thoughts, except I am actually really excited about Craig Frawley. it's a shame that we had to promise him the centre spot to sign him tho (which is actually only a rumour - there's no proof that we made any such "promise")Edwahu said:Regardless of what happens on the park our recruitment was shocking.
We got 2 veterans who no one else was interested in.
We got 3 or 4 flegg players who had to be promised first grade spots.
We got 2 average first graders who probably wouldnt have come if we didnt offer them long term deals.
We missed out on pretty much every player we really wanted.
We lost our two best forwards, our best young back, our most dangerous attacking player and Drew's comedy value. Things might turn out all right just because we have some exceptional juniors but if we keep recruiting like this every year we will be screwed.
If we get Fielden ill change my mind though.
Brimmer, i'll tell you what i'm worried about: surely you can agree that just about every game where we fire, there are three guys who dominate: Luke Davico, Ruben Wiki and Mark McLinden. Macca might not be very consistent, but just about every time we've toppled a top team, or gone close to it, he has been the man. he's almost single-handedly won us games at times (see Raiders v Broncos 04) - how can you say that doesn't matter?! when McLinden is off his game, the Raiders are off their game. at least in 2003 when McLinden was injured for hte first couple of games, Drew was there to fill in playing a similar sort of role. who will we have next year? lincoln withers is a good player, but he's no Mark McLinden. when he's on his game, Macca's one of the best players in the comp. the same can't be said about withers, and Carney doesn't (i'll say it right here) have the razzle-dazzle of McLinden either. he might be good in other areas, but he's a different type of player altogether.
in saying all that, i don't think it's all doom and gloom for the Raiders in 2005. if Elliott makes the right decisions, eg, selecting Carney and Graham in the side in key positions (this is the most basic of decisions - it alone will not guarantee success), then we can go a long way. we have a lot of depth, Kris Kahler is a fantastic attacking back-rower, Marshall Chalk is a dangerous ball runner...it's all up to Elliott. our success is in his hands.
