Regardless of what happens on the park our recruitment was shocking.
We got 2 veterans who no one else was interested in.
We got 3 or 4 flegg players who had to be promised first grade spots.
We got 2 average first graders who probably wouldnt have come if we didnt offer them long term deals.
We missed out on pretty much every player we really wanted.

We lost our two best forwards, our best young back, our most dangerous attacking player and Drew's comedy value. Things might turn out all right just because we have some exceptional juniors but if we keep recruiting like this every year we will be screwed.

If we get Fielden ill change my mind though.
top post, pretty much put words to my thoughts, except I am actually really excited about Craig Frawley. it's a shame that we had to promise him the centre spot to sign him tho (which is actually only a rumour - there's no proof that we made any such "promise")

Brimmer, i'll tell you what i'm worried about: surely you can agree that just about every game where we fire, there are three guys who dominate: Luke Davico, Ruben Wiki and Mark McLinden. Macca might not be very consistent, but just about every time we've toppled a top team, or gone close to it, he has been the man. he's almost single-handedly won us games at times (see Raiders v Broncos 04) - how can you say that doesn't matter?! when McLinden is off his game, the Raiders are off their game. at least in 2003 when McLinden was injured for hte first couple of games, Drew was there to fill in playing a similar sort of role. who will we have next year? lincoln withers is a good player, but he's no Mark McLinden. when he's on his game, Macca's one of the best players in the comp. the same can't be said about withers, and Carney doesn't (i'll say it right here) have the razzle-dazzle of McLinden either. he might be good in other areas, but he's a different type of player altogether.

in saying all that, i don't think it's all doom and gloom for the Raiders in 2005. if Elliott makes the right decisions, eg, selecting Carney and Graham in the side in key positions (this is the most basic of decisions - it alone will not guarantee success), then we can go a long way. we have a lot of depth, Kris Kahler is a fantastic attacking back-rower, Marshall Chalk is a dangerous ball runner...it's all up to Elliott. our success is in his hands.

I'm so sick of the negativity... Good on ya Brimmer. 05 will not be anywhere near the disaster that most people have condemned it to be, and I agree with you 100%.

Nice to see someone look on the bright side for once. 8)

Fielden will be a great buy, but if we dont get him, its not the end of the world, and one player won't decide how our recruitment has gone, when we have bought IMO 5 good players, in Frawley, Ale, J Smith, Adamson, Withers

i'm so sick of this distinction between "negativity" and "positivity". i'm not either poso or nego, i'm a rationalist, i believe what my reason tells me makes sense. if someone wants to simply write off my ideas as "negative", then go for it, but the reasoning came first, not the negativity.

He said in an interview in the paper the other day that he has signed to "play in the centres". But other than that, you make good points.

still Azz, that doesn't imply that there was an actual promise made to Frawley for a centre spot, it may just mean that he sensed an opportunity here in the centres, beacuse Joel Monaghan had left and there were many different centres used in 04. i hope a promise wasn't made, because the centre spot should go to the most deserving (Frawley may well be the most deserving, but he should have to prove it, to earn his spot)

watch it Bay56, you might lose any credibility you had left!

Kris_man you know me better than that .... I'm looking at the overall picture .... every single issue plays it's part in forming my opinion of management and coach .... imo there have been more bad news stories than good (in fact far too many bad news stories).

I would like to see people leading this club that are selected on ability rather than what family tree they come from.
