I'm not sure how to articulate this best but I'll try anyway.
Consider this narrative as one which would apply to any player.
If you play the game in such a way that you bring attention to yourself for acts which most consider to not be in the spirit of the game, you will cop it from opposing and neutral fans. If you continue to lash out and it goes largely unpunished, fans will inevitably identify a bias toward that player.
The jeering will continue until the player changes the behaviour and shifts the focus onto their ability to play the game rather than their ability to act out.
If the player fails to do that, it's then up to the officials to act on these incidents and apply measured discipline to change the behaviour.
Should those options fail, then the supporters often conclude that the player is indeed getting away with more than others and is treated differently. This is confirmed by way of actual events which highlight the lack of consistency.
A bi-product of this will be a continued show of dissatisfaction from the supporter base toward said player. Being heckled every week would be tiring but it's not racist, its banter. Banter which is brought on by the competitive nature of our sport.
There's an easy way to not copping it from fans every week, don't be a flog. You silence critics by giving them nothing to talk about.
If it gets to the point where it becomes abusive or racially fuelled comments are being identified, then label those offending individuals as racist, bigots or whatever.
On a side note, if we wound the clock back and players were still throwing punches, would LM be so confident? Probably not. Same goes for the other grubs like CM, NAS etc.
