Enemy at the Gates wasn't bad but I wasn't a fan of actors playing Russians with an English accent

It took me a while to figure out what the f**k was going on in that movie........... My attention/brain was feeling the effects of a massive night out before though so I guess my ignorance could be slightly excused.

It's bloody brilliant for any decade.

And some of the greatest films of all time are from the 50's

12 angry men ( IMO the finest film of all time )
North by northwest
The seventh seal
Vertigo
Strangers on a train
Rear window
Rashoman
The killing
The forbidden planet
Rebel without a cause
High noon
Ben hur
Sunset boulevard
On the waterfront ( contains the greatest performance ever IMO )
A streetcar named desire
Dial M for murder
Paths of glory
The searchers
The day the earth stood still
Wild strawberries
Touch of evil
The 400 blows
The night of the hunter
Stalag 17

The list goes on.

Outside of the 70s it's probably the greatest decade in cinema history.

Excellent movie!

My fav is the most depressing "Threads". Centres around the build up to a northern hemisphere nuclear exchange and its result on the residents of Sheffield, England. Made on a shoestring budget, it was banned in the UK after a family of four committed suicide stating they didn't want to live through such an event.

I also liked "The Hurt Locker" and a totally brutal film called "Men Behind The Sun" where the Japanese use Chinese prisoners as guinea pigs in biological experiments.

Heap of foreign movies especially on the Eastern Front. European movies also have access to a lot of the real tanks as well. You won't see 1960s and 70s tanks in them.

Stalingrad

The Brest Fortress/ Fortress of War

Come and See

Downfall

My Way had more turns in it then an Apple turnover with Koreans fighting for Japs then Russians then Germans then getting captured by the US on D-Day. Amazing movie really.

Brotherhood of War great movie about the Korean War made by the guy who made My Way.

These movies were incredibly brutal without a yank in sight.

The Bridge (Die Brucke) was really good. But it was made by a German.

Of the Yank movies

Saving Private Ryan for the battle scenes but was typical US sentimentality and 10 guys take on hundreds of Germans and win is typical US fair. Actually I preferred a Bridge Too Far because I'm more into history.

When Trumpets Fade is the only movie I know of about the Hurtgen Forest where the US got their arses handed to them in a drawn out battle before the Battle of the Bulge. It's a neglected battle which the US generals would like to be kept forgotten.

Also Gettysburg and the series Anzacs.
