I give WT a B minus so far for this season. WT sit on 7th position and in the middle of the field. Their consistency is all over the place- not just from match to match but within a game itself. Against the Knights at the end of the first half it was not looking too good. Nor have WT meet a top 4 team yet- their first big test is next week against the Bulldogs (currently ranked 2 in the premiership race).
So far we have won 4 and lost 3. All ranks noted are as of end of round 7.
Won against:
Raiders - 34- 26 (ranked #13)
Roosters 40- 24 (ranked #14)
Storm - 16- 6 (ranked #8)
Knights - 26- 24 (ranked #6)
Wins average score 29 to 20.
Lost against:
Cowboys- 14- 42 (ranked #10)
Panthers- 22- 42- (ranked #11)
Manly- 10- 23- (ranked #12)
Lost average score- 15 to 35.
So, in 7 games only once have WT kept the opposition below 23 points (lets say 4 tries) this indicates their defence is still very suspect and mistakes or errors made by WT, if capitalised on by the opposition will hurt us. Our attack is OK but we have to try to ensure we score more than they can score against us but on current history we have to score more than 4 tries to break even with our opponents each match to give us an even chance of winning. Our defence has to tighten up and fast.
Player performance- still have key player makers eg Marshall, Farah, Moltzen, Lawrence and Tuiaki playing well but with quiet times that should not be happening as much as they do.
Forwards- in general playing well. Ellis and Galloway have been inspirational and the others playing good solid back up. Shifting Gibbs from front row to either interchange or back-row may be a useful move.
Halves- Marshall playing OK but has his moments. Morris provides solid support and good defensive efforts but very limited in attack. Many would like to see him on the interchange bench and the 5/8 position open to others.
Backs- generally solid- previously Collis and Ryan have been quiet and definitely outshone by Tuiaki and Lawrence on the other side of the field but last week saw Collis and Ryan fire up. Moltzen playing well at fullback.
The question is how will they perform against a top 4 team- Broncos, Bulldogs, Dragons or Titans?
