Sweet revenge for Anasta
October 4, 2004
BULLDOGS five-eighth Braith Anasta made the stunning revelation last night that a high-profile Sydney Roosters player phoned to sledge him after winning the 2002 grand final.
Anasta refused to identify the caller who delighted in the Bulldogs having been forced out of the 2002 finals series by the salary cap scandal.
The call has been burning in the No.6's mind for the past two years.
But it was sweet revenge last night when the 'Dogs were able to beat their fierce rivals 16-13 in tonight's grand final at Telstra Stadium.
"I'm so happy that we beat the Roosters," said Anasta in the dressing sheds after the victory in front of 82,127 fans.
"I got a phone call from one of their players in 2002 after they won saying 'sucked in for getting kicked out, we won the comp'.
"I'm not going to say who it is but 'egg on your face' - that's all I'm going to say.
"I've kept it quiet until this day. I haven't said a word about it.
"It's been in the back of my mind ever since then.
"He knows who he is, so sucked in. Ever since that day I've never forgotten about it. I hope he has a good day tomorrow."
The Bulldogs were stripped of 37 competition points in 2002 and finished with the wooden spoon after being caught for massive salary cap breaches.
It was dubbed the "grand final that never was" after the NZ Warriors appeared in the decider, going down 30-8 to the Roosters.
The Roosters have advanced to four of the past five grand finals, winning only the 2002 decider.
