Who do we keep?

Lewis Brown should be a priority re-signing in my opinion.

He has always been quality throughout his time with us whether in his rightful position of second row or when required to fill the utility role as hooker/centre.

He is so under rated by so many supporters and I cannot understand why that is.

He is,as he always been,a very dependable player.

I feel privileged that he is a Panther every time he runs out for us.

For mine he is one of those players who every club needs.

He always give 100%.

He is versatile.

He is a tremendous club man and an outstanding person who presents very well.

The funny thing is I don't believe he is on outrageous dollars. When he signed with us from the Warriors the reported sums were modest to say the least.

I understand what is reported and what is the actual fact can be two different things but what ever we have paid Lewis Brown he has been worth every cent in my opinion.

So we have Plum and Kite retiring, Simmons unlikely to get a first grade squad contract if he doesn't retire. Brown, Docker, John, Latimore, Manu, all on first grade contracts off contract at the end of season. And I don't know if one of Smith, Anderson or BMM are on first grade contracts. Merrin coming in, Blake and R.Jennings I suggest will be in the 25 next season. Like 5 spots we need to fill either by resigning or promoting NSW cup players.

I think out of the list off contract that Brown, Latimore and Manu will be given another year while of the rest in NSW Cup both BMM and Anderson showed when used late last season in the Roosters finals game we lose nothing when throwing them into the game. I like Saunders and Fisher Harris in Cup too, I never miss a game and both of them are going well. Latu is great for 10-15 minutes each half too, just needs better fitness. Next year if the NRL drop the interchange to 6 we are going to need big minutes players like Anderson and Lats who can shore up the middle because both are excellant defenders as well. And if we don't re-sign these guys soon other clubs with crap Cup sides will pick them up cheaply.

I thought Sika Manu was great captaining Tonga. I don't know if he played 80 minutes, but he was in everything. If Penrith undervalue him, he might be receiving some better offers.

The salary cap doesn't seem to stop the Roosters having a team full of rep players.

Easts had to offload quite a bit of talent to accumulate the playing roster they have always had.Just like every other club, you have to be be astute in your buying and selling to make your side the difference in between a good one or a great one.

Some can do it,some can't although the talent plane equivalence seems to be evident.

Overall, the difference these days seems to be the injury toll. And the importance of those that are injured as evident for our side in having both our halves and hooker out.

It really puts a dent into ones chances of competing.

Lewis Brown says he fears he’ll be forced out of Penrith

PENRITH second-rower Lewis Brown fears the salary cap squeeze could force him out of the NRL club he doesn’t want to leave.
The 28-year-old former Warrior admitted other teams have already inquired about his services when his current deal expires at the end of the season.
On the same day Panthers general manager Phil Gould expressed hope injured centre Jamal Idris would also fulfil the rest of his three-year contract, Brown reiterated a desire to remain at the foot of the mountains.
St George Illawarra forward Trent Merrin announced in March he will move to the Panthers next season on a three-year deal reportedly worth $750,000 a season.

“Hopefully we can work something out. Obviously salary cap’s a bit of an issue here,” Brown said.
“There’s a few other clubs that have shown interest. Over the next month hopefully I can work out what I’m doing.
“At the end of the day I’ve got to do what’s right on the field. I’m a team man and the team comes first.” Brown ruled out a return to the Warriors, and has recently been linked with a move to the Wests Tigers. The former Kiwis representative said he wanted to make a decision on his future within the month.
“Christchurch is home for me, but Auckland, I’ll probably move there after I finish my footy career,” he said “I obviously started my career at the Warriors and it would’ve been nice if I could go back there.
“But obviously my priorities lay here at Penrith.

“I first and foremost want to stay here, but sometimes that doesn’t happen within the comp. They’ve got a lot of young juniors coming through here, especially in the back row.” Gould said the club was still waiting on a decision from Idris on whether he wanted to return to the side when he recovers from his knee injury.
“The prognosis on that is excellent but Jamal needs to decide what he wants to do for his future,” Gould said.
“At this point our priority is Jamal’s happiness and his health and it’s completely in his court what he wants to do in his career, whether it be in rugby league or something else down the track. “He is still in a cast and recovering from his knee injury — Jamal will make his mind up in good time because he has a lot of things to think about.”

Yeah I hope we can keep him he has been awesome since arriving. No drama, fills in wherever asked and always gives his all. He is one of the fittest if not the fittest in the team aswell.

Brown and Elijah Taylor are 2 of our best non marquee signings since Kelly and Mortimer back in the late 80's in my opinion. We need to keep Lewis the Lizard at our club at all costs.

We developed most of our rep players, and we've let a lot players go over the past 3/4 years.

You guys have done it very similar to us anyway, released a lot of guys in 2012/13 and have rebuilt your club.

Maybe so Roostersrule, but there always seems to be some 3rd party cash stashed away when a marquee signing like SBW comes your way. I used to crunch the numbers on a regular basis. It's probably not as bad now as it has been in the past, but there was a time when the roosters were raping and pillaging big name players from other clubs and pushing the boundaries of the salary cap to bursting point. Those that are partial to the odd conspiracy theory couldn't be blamed for doubting Ian Shubert's penmanship with the green audit pen when taking a very, very quick glance over the books.

I dare say Melbourne were just unlucky to get caught, because it was also as plain as the nose on your face that those grubs were pushing the boundaries of the cap.

I think the NRL is finally getting the salary cap tightened up and as a result we are seeing one of the most even competitions in the history of the game, which is great for the fans, but not so great for punters that like to bet on form and favourites.

I said when we signed Merrin we would lose Brown. Unless Idris does go then seems sadly I was correct

Everyone said that though.

Everyone had assumed that Brown/Manu would be moved on to accommodate Merrin and allowing Cartwright to be a consistent starter.

But we'll see.

I'd love to keep him...but if he goes for more money elsewhere...more power to him.

Brown is likely underpaid, and Manu overpaid. Brown said he wants double what he's on, which could be perfectly reasonable if he's on 200kish. Manu, well all our cap must be somewhere, because if you plug in the numbers for our players from the papers that no-one believes and everyone says is overs you're still well below the cap.

^ You got Katoa in the gains and re-singings list and I think Simmo is confirmed as retiring.

Cheers for the update.
