If the Home Countries are allowed to field teams, Australia should be allowed to compete as states (The MANX have their own team...The MANX for christsakes...)

I was watching the women's basketball this morning and they mentioned that the sport will be featuring at the next Commonwealth Games. And after we mauled the two New Zealand sides in consecutive days I'd say that's another two golds to look forward to.

I can't wait for the men's basketball there. Canada may surprise the Aussies and Kiwis, if NBA stars Steve Nash and Jamaal Magliore play. It's about time they put basketball in the CWG.

I like the commonwealth games for the simple reason that the USA isnt in it. There is just something about that team that I dont like. Hmm maybe the fact that they think they are all absolute legends, and play on that fact. Sorry that is just my opinion.

Kinda like Grant Hackett.... Sorry, but leave the top pulling off, chest pounding, muscle flexing antics for the upty Yanks!

And i think this could risk being the end of the Commonwealth games if/ when we plunder the medal tally.

Perhaps we should split into States. And England should merge with the rest of the brit's and be Great Britain as they do for the Olympics. It would be a good race for 6th on the Medal table then between Tasmania and Great Britain.... :D

It would actually be a big improvement if Australia (and possibly Canada as well) competed as states, the medal tallies would be far less of a foregonme conclusion and you'd get some tasty inter-state rivalries happenning.

I don't mind the Commonwealth games. Any chance we get to towel the Poms is fine with me.

The states thing is an interesting concept actually. It would certainly make things more competitive, although you wouldn't really be able to have a 'Great Britain' side then would you? You'd have a Welsh side, an Irish side, a Scotish side and an English side.

Hmmm I guess the only interest in the 2006 Commonwealth games from my viewpoint can Australia break the 100 gold barrier

Stop bagging the Commonwealth Games! The 2nd biggest world sporting competition is great - and it's in Melbourne 2006.

Probably you have to be a proper indepedent country to compete in the Olympics, and politically England, Wales etc are all part of the UK.
With the Commonwealth games it's their show so I gues they can do what they like! :?

Thanks. I wasn't aware of that.

I just assumed that since GB were a whole team in the Olympics, it would be the same story for the Commonwealth games.

Maybe they should all join up to be GB so they'd be more competitive, while all the Australian states spilt up.

I wonder why the home nations also compete separately in the soccer WC. Tradition I guess.

Is there a listing of the CWG medal tallies back through history? I'd like to see how long the Aussies have been so dominant. I suspect there may have been a time when Canada was second behind England in medals, but I'm not sure.
