Who do you think the best defender in the world is at the current moment in time?

I'll make a category for each position and then from the votes, make a World 11.

At the moment, Nesta.

Jaap Stam could probably be in with a shot as well. He's lost a bit of pace and not as good as he was at Man Utd, but from what I've seen he is still scaring the crap out of every forward around. He is (or was) the ultimate enforcer.

On current form, I agree on Nesta. But in saying that there are a lot of young blokes coming through the ranks now that are starting to shine really well.

The best defender in the world will almost always be based in Italy, as gritty defences underline the policy of many Italian-based managers. Rio Ferdinand was the best defender in the world for a few months (post world-cup) but injuries have since played him down to perhaps fourth or even fifth ranked defender in the world.

Ferdinand - Terry partnership for England!

HArd to say, Maldini is still a very good defender.
Makes me wonder.

True that.

Maldini, for his age is quite brilliant. He and Nesta form quite a formidable partnership at Milan, and this is the main reason why they are European Champions.

But i still think Nesta is the best by a fairly long way.

Silvestre is an underated player
Absolutely. Since moving to centre back for us midway through last year, he has been simply sensational. lol, when he was often being caught out of position at left back, I couldn't believe he wanted to play centre back where I thought he would be caught out even more. But it's been the complete opposite. His partnership with first Brown, then Rio (and perhaps Brown again once he gets back from injury soon and if, god forbid, Rio is outed for quite a while) was the platform that won us the premiership last season.

Unfortunately, he had a shocker against Fulham on the weekend, and may now have a small injury.

Guys like Mexes, Ferdinand and Chivu will probably be the main ones competing for this title in a few years (although Nesta still has a long time ahead of him).

Excellent point about Mexes, Ferdinand and Chivu. You can add Samuel to that list as well. He is still only 24.

I've voted for Nesta due to his form over the past few years but out of that list you would have to say that Maldini is the best over the duration of their careers. One of the great defenders of all time and one of my personal favourites along with Baresi.

I voted for Zanetti. But to many classy defenders in there.

IMO Silvestre is only really at his best in the EPL and tends to go missing in Europe. But then what do I know?

Even though he's probably really not CURRENTLY still the very best...My vote still goes to Paolo Maldini. A class act for the past 15 years on what was for much of that time - the inarguable toughest stage of all - Serie A.

Well he still has as sharp a defender's brain & instincts as exists anywhere in the world. That's for sure!! It must just be SO frustrating for any forward to be marked by Paolo Maldini!!...Also a mark of respect to have the Godfather of defensive Italian football put on your case....but mainly just frustrating as all hell I reckon!!!

Plus, good player tho he undoubtedly is - I just don't LIKE Alessandro Nesta!!! :p
