Any one of George Piggins, Noel Kelly, Steve Kneen, Ian Walsh, would have put little Cammy on his bum, to never get up again. it's an illusion perpetrated and sustained by soft rules.

I just can't understand all this Dally Messenger fanboy crap.

There wouldn't be one person alive who has actually seen him play in the flesh. And it would be highly doubtful that there is any footage of him playing.

If there is any film, it would be grainy old black and white shit taken from ground level. You'd be lucky to recognise any of the players, let alone Messenger.

To me, the playing prowess of Messenger is written in folklore, handed down over the years and probably exaggerated, just like the "big fish" story.

Perhaps Dally Ms extensive influence upon the game of rugby league has little to do with his playing ability.

This isn't a thread for best player ever.

Fair enough. But where's the evidence of his influence? Not some hand me down comment from Joe Blow at the Bat And Ball Hotel back in 1915.

It wouldn't be unreasonable to consider some coaches to be a greater influence on the game than any player.

By "fanboy crap" I'm guessing you mean "history"

get yourself educated.

Messenger was obviously one of the greatest athletes of his day and his feats widely recognized and recorded. His stats and records ( one record from 1911 only recently broken ) are pretty impressive by any standard with or without film footage to back it up. Legends don't come into being just because of a few delusional fans.

You two have entirely missed the point.

Dally M must be right up there.

Alex Burden anyone? Wasn't he the Glebe player who was injured badly and really got the debate about professionalism and player payments off the ground in NSW?

If there was a single player responsible for turning Union into a game I can watch he gets my vote

Why is Lockyer not there?

Because he could not tackle anyone bigger than Matty Bowen.

Back in 2004, during the Test match Australia vs France, the French second rower Jamal Fakir, running with the ball, charged straight at Locky, and knocked Locky back 10 feet. Locky landed on his bum looking very pathetic. All the French players were laughing at what happened.
