AUSTRALIAN Idol runner-up Shannon Noll has revealed that he turned to marijuana to cope with the death of his father.

Noll said he used the drug to numb the pain of his dad's death three years ago.

But it was his concern for the relationship with his child that drove him to leave the drug behind.

Noll makes the personal revelations in a new TV documentary called Up Close, filmed this week. He talks frankly about the day of his father's death on their New South Wales farm, in Condobolin.

"I had a flat tyre on the farm. I went to a service station to get it fixed and that five or 10 minutes made me too late to help dad.

"I drove through the farm gate and two tanks were lying down, and dad was lying near them. In my heart of hearts I knew the reaper was coming to my family that day and dad put his hand up. That was the man he was, he said."

Noll also revealed the financial struggle that followed.

"Dad was pronounced dead at 9am and by 1pm the bank said it had frozen every account with his name on it."

The documentary will be screened on Channel 10 at the end of July.

Asked by host Ian Dixon about the rumour he was a regular at a brothel, Noll laughed and said: "I don't think I'd have to pay for it.

"I'm not being arrogant. I had a crack when I was a kid – it was a life experience and you can't die wondering about that stuff," he said.
