if it wasnt for kobe wanting the lime light so much, they could have still had shaq there.

i originally thought kobe could meet the likes of jordan, but the kid doesnt have team qualities.

remeber, there is no "I" in the word "Team"

:nwave: "kobe, over here man.... pass..."

Yeah, because having Shaq and his declining form and 20 million a year for the next 5 years contract would be such a fantastic decision. This rubbish Lakers team is currently 21-19, Kobe doesn't pass the ball because he has no one to pass to... Lamar Odom's been playing like a leper, Chris Mihm and Kwame are reasonably useless offensively, Smush is a D-Leaguer hitting some shots... the complete ignorance relating to Kobe and the Lakers is astounding these days.

It's not like Miami are doing much better with their star-studded lineup. So much for Wade being the ultimate team player in comparison with Kobe's ball hogging and shot jacking, they're only 2 games up on the Lakers and playing in the East.

um... no, but from what i know, shaq came to the lakers, had their best record since 1990. kobe came into the scene after a few years, they got themselves three nba chamionship rings, shaq even got mvp all three years.

then there was the big falling out between the two of who gets the limelight. the lakers simply went kobe's way and shafted shaq. after that, the lakers have pretty much gone downhill.

what im trying to say is, even though shaq's already reached the peak of his career, he could have still been used to this day, and could have been a great help for them at the moment.

:nwave: kobe!!! for the love of god!!!

im sorry but i personally believe lomar odem has done a pretty good job so far.

It's "Lamar Odom"... if you believe that, you probably haven't been watching any Laker games.

That second paragraph is pure media speculation. There's no solid evidence one way or the other that a dispute about who gets the limelight was the reason. Shaq even said himself they wanted to keep the young guy. They hardly "shafted" him.

It's only been one full season since that mess happened, the Lakers had a musical chairs with their coaching staff last season and an entire group of new players to try and accomodate, not to mention Kobe's first season as "the man". Did you think everything would just click into gear (despite 4 new starters and no depth)?

Well yeah, any half decent player would be a great help to them. My point is that Shaq's not only reached the peak of his career, he's on a steady decline and that mixed with the fact that he will be owed roughly $100,000,000 over the next 5 years. In 4 or 5 years time he might only be putting up 10/9... would you pay 20 mil. per season for that?

Kobe is the best player in the league. He is not always doing the all round things this year, but he is capable of playing great D, rebounding, passing if he was on a better team. Granted it's his fault he doesn't have a better team (ie Shaq leaving), but if you set personality aside and just consider basketball skill, Kobe is by far the best.

Having just watched him drop 81 on the Raptors, I'd say there is no one else in the league who could do that.

There is im afraid Steve
If every teams leader decided to take 46 shots and hog the ball all night and only have 2 assists then a dozen or so players would do it nearley every night

Iverson
James
Carter
Nowitzki

Names that could do it

You're full of sh*t. That's the most flawed logic I've ever seen. Iverson's taken 42 shots in a game before, his career high points scored is 60... and it wasn't even the same game. Would you rather Kobe dished out 15 assists to his useless teammates and the Lakers lose by 10? Because that's where the game was headed before he took over in the 3rd.

No, because they can be stopped when double teamed. Kobe gets double teamed and scores anyway. Those players could get 50 on a given night, but not 81.

Its great he got 81 in a game but that doesn't mean anything when the playoffs roll around and the lakers aren't there.
I prefer someone like Tim Duncan anyday, sure his stats aren't as spectacular as Kobe, but he can score 20 and 10 everynight without being a liability and a ball hog.
I also rate LeBron over Kobe, sure LeBron isnt a winner just yet but he's less selfish and is a better all round player

I agree with the bit about the playoffs, and Duncan.

I don't agree that Lebron is better all round than Kobe. Yes he has a bigger stronger body, but if you break down the game into its skills - dribbling, shooting, passing, defending, rebounding - Kobe is better in all except maybe rebounding. I know he isn't passing much this year, but Kobe can be a good passer. Plus Kobe is a proven clutch performer, where as Saab said on another thread LBJ has yet to prove himself as a 4th quarter clutch shooter.

I've already acknowledged that - but still, 81 points, not 50 or 60 but 81. 2nd most in league history. That's hard to do no matter how weak the opposition.

yeah I didn't mean to take the shine off of it what a freaking great performance but i would think someone like T-mac or iverson could go off like that too

imo Kobe is the best player in the NBA and doesn't get the full regard he deserves because of off-court stuff and pesonality.
