Why Can't the Video Ref Rule On a Forward Pass?

I've been trying to work out why video referees can't disallow a try because of a forward pass. Is it because the touch judge would have already said it was a forward pass? Please, help me out.

Whatever the reason, I believe it's a ridiculous rule.

Camera angles can be deceptive.

this

they could in 1997 in SL and 1998 during the NRL IIRC

it proved to be a bit of a failure though so was abandoned

Thanks mate. I'm surprised it didn't work. I would've thought that a camera looking across the field and positioned on the tryline would've worked fine.

Nope. It was an absolute joke.

They would look at the replay for about 5 minutes and still not be able to make the correct call.

Previously they would look at it from every angle over and over and the pass would look different from different angles. And after a ton of replays it would go back to ref's call. Happened too many times so they stopped it and rightly so.

Yep.

The problem now is that touchies are too scared to make a call.

There are way too many long passes ruled forward these days & way too many short forward passes let go.

A pass thrown long to a winger could easily float 3m forward & still have been thrown backwards.

You would need a camera angle exactly in line with the pass with no visual interference from other players to make the call. The broadcast view stuffs up the angles. If you are looking at the play from a slightly forward viewpoint a pass can appear forward that is line ball.

Because the physics of projecting a 3-dimensional image onto a 2-dimensional screen mean that some passes that look forward are actually backward, and vice versa.

Yep, all this.

Surprised nobody has arrived in this thread with the "it ended up in front of where he threw it from so it was forward" thought process that usually turns up in these threads...

So they can't rule on a forward pass no matter how obvious but the can now suddenly over rule a touch judge one where a ball went out?

Seems legit :sarcasm:

Agree. The same concept with relation to camera angles comes into play. Surely with the new video ref process it's something that needs to be looked at. Sometimes there is a forward pass that is clearly forward from every angle and it SHOULD be called if one of the refs (including video ref) is in a position to rule on it.

Check the pass at 9:03 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r3HuL9W3A3o

the camera angles argument is flawed. we can rule on knock ons' and whether someones heel has hit the touchline (ask hayne)

it does get more complicated with passing and the physics involved, but as fans we can sit in our lounge rooms and see a forard pass, the commentators can see it, why the f**k cant the video ref? given we npow also have a system where the ref has to make a decision before he sends it upstairs i dont think we'd have the shambles we had before.

I'm not concerned about the lineball passes, i'm concerned about the ball which has clearly been passed 1m forward and everyone who saw it knows it went forwards but the touchie was too gutless to put up his flag and the ref thinks it may have been forwarsds but cant check
